Cicada in Red Hook NY fern garden

I found this Cicada in my fern garden today.  It is the first time that I have gotten up close to a live Cicada this year.

The first time I heard that piercing sound I was showing a house and I did not make the connect at first.  I thought the neighborhood was noisy but it finally hit me, it was our friends the Cicadas who visit every seventeen years.

Another encounter was when I was going to do a listing presentation and the homeowner was afraid to open the door because she was afraid they would get inside;  the sound then was deafening.

They cause a mess

I have been noticing that the windshield is a bit messy these days, why? Driving down the road these critters smash into the windshield leaving a mess.

Have you tried eating a Cicada?

I have been told about the protein value of this creature however that’s a cuisine I happily skipped.   I have heard of people who ate  a Cicada meal on a dare.

I finally connected

Today I finally found a good use for a Cicada, it made a great photography subject against the ferns in my garden.

 Time is running out

If you have not gotten up close to these noisy insects you need to do so soon; they make an appearance every seventeen years; mate and then die.  Their time among us will be up soon and I am sure we won’t miss the accompanying sounds.

Do you have a Cicada story? please leave a comment.

Some folks think they're too noisy but personally they bring back good memories for me.  They were quite prevalent up at grandma and grandpa's house in Waller, TX.

I haven't seen them down here.  Wow, on the windshield thing.  That is so funny that you thought it was a noisy neighborhood when it was actually the cicadas.

The cicadas passed us by this time around but not so a few years ago. To say they are noisy is an understatement and the mess on the windshield. Ugh. Love your photos as it makes them look so serene and beautiful.

I'm so glad they seemed to have skipped Long Island this year.  I'm old enough to remember them and the only story I have to share is they are revolting and noisy.

The size of those rascals would make one big old mess on a windshield!  Not sure I have ever been up close to these critters. Have a great New York day!

Jennifer, great use of a Cicada against the backdrop of a beautiful fern. I've never had the desire to eat one...yuk! but I know in many places they are a good source of food to many.... I just know they're loud little creatures.

Jennifer, I have heard these pests are very noisy, but never have seen (or heard) them.     I would never try to eat one, not my thing.
