South Pasadena CA - The Ostrich Farm Work-Live Lofts
Located at 1010 Sycamore Avenue in South Pasadena is the Ostrich Farm Lofts complex. Yes, this was originally an ostrich farm and quite the tourist attraction in its day.
Originally opened in 1886 by Edwin Cawston, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the United States’ first ostrich farm. It has been stated that the original ostriches made their journey from South Africa to Texas and eventually by train to South Pasadena. Unfortunately, this wasn’t an entirely successful trip as only 18 of the 50 ostriches survived. Eventually, there was a population of over 100 ostriches at the farm. During the early part of the 20th century, visitors could be taken on ostrich drawn carriage rides and buy ostrich related items at the factory store. It would later become the warehouse for a surfwear manufacturer.
In 2006, 53 live-work lofts were developed from the historic landmark building. In 2009, an auction was held to sell the remaining units. The spaces range in size from approximately 700 to over 2000 square feet with high ceilings, exposed ducting and brickwork, polished concrete floors and high end finishes in the kitchens and baths. There are laundry connections in each unit. The entire complex is gated with parking, gardens, terraces and a lobby. South Pasadena is a separate city within the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County well known for its small town atmosphere.
As of July 1, 2013, there is one loft available for sale - the approximately 760 square foot unit is listed at $389,000 according to our local multiple listing service(MLS). According to MLS records, there has been no sales yet in 2013 or in 2012. In 2011, there were two closed transactions closed(MLS) - both were short sales closing at $310,000 and $342,000 respectively.
