When Exposed to Sunlight, These Clothes Clean Themselves

Could this mean the end of laundry day? Textile scientists in Australia and Hong Kong have developed a special coating for fabricsmade of titanium dioxide nanoparticles that actually cause the fabric to self-clean when exposed to sunlight.

Besides the obvious benefit of less time spent doing laundry, the new fabric could also mean less water used to wash clothes and less detergent being washed down drains -- both of which are good for the environment.

~~ When I read this article my  mouth dropped....I sat back and my mind began to go in circles as if I just took a sip of Red Bull on what I could do first with that extra time. Could you imagine? It would be a miracle not to mention "global warming"  but seems like that's nothing that would happen anytime soon. But the idea did entertain me....  ~~~

My son had to wear cloth diapers because he was allergic to disposable diapers.  He is also allergic to chemicals.  I did research way back when and found when you did plain washings and hung laundry out to dry, the sun already baked away bacteria and viruses and naturally bleached clothing to boot!

More chemicals in clothing scares me!

Zoya, I am not so sure about the whole more chemicals in clothes thing.  It is kind of like the whole self cleaning oven, and we know how much that smells and probably is not great inhaling those fumes in. I  would probably have to do more research  on it, but I really like the whole food that cooks itself.  Now that is technology. lol

Respectfully just as information, whether we realize it or not, most of us are exposed to it on a daily basis anyhow.

Titanium dioxide (aka TiO2) is in just about every paint you use (nail polish, car exteriors, walls, etc.)

It is what makes makeup UV-resistant such as foundation and powder (and is also in sunscreen - the higher the SPF content, typically, the higher the TiO2).

It is also in most non-clear plastics (PVC pipes that drinking water goes through, plastic tupperware, even the very thin grocery bags you get at the store).

If you eat M&M's or Ho-Ho's, the white in those is not natural (actually white is the reflection/refraction of light - not a "natural" color), the white part is made up of TiO2 along with other ingredients...

What blows my mind is the ilmenite/rutile that actually makes TiO2 comes out of the ground from all over the world (and is Dark Brown/Black in color), then forced through a chemical or sulfuric acid process (through temperature/pressure/velocities/chemical reactions), somehow results in the "white" substance TiO2.  Amazing who ever thought it up in the first place....     :-)
