Here we are on Day two of no school due to weather. I commend the school districts for their decisions to keep our children safe.
However, my kids are going NUTS trying to find something to do!
I know there are some super organized parents out there that have creative activities and healthy snacks and meaningful dialogues prepared for days like this.
THIS BLOG ISN'T FOR YOU!!
Personally, I am feeling a little panicked thaFt I am going to have to amuse Gasoline (6) and Matches (4) for another day. Yesterday was easier. The weather was a little warmer, so we went sledding in the yard, and shovelled the snow. Today, the weather is much colder, and I can't just send them out to play.
Some things I have done that have worked before...
Cooking School. Kids love to cook. There is something inherently "grown up" about measuring, mixing, and of course, making a mess. We made waffles this morning, and my kids had a great time.
Pretend First Grade. I know my oldest has a spelling test if the snow storm ever stops. I gave them each a chalkboard and chalk, and we practiced. (The younger one just practiced writing his name). They got excited, called me "Mrs. Dodgson" and asked for extra recess.
Snowlfakes. You know this one! Paper, folded up, scissors. Keeps 'em busy for a little while.
Clean the toys. This one is so simple, but can cause a little mess. Squirt some dish soap in a container, and fill it with water, making LOTS of bubbles. Drain the water out, leaving only the bubbles. Have your kids find some washable toys, give them a washclothe, and let them clean their toys. I usually put a towel under the toy to keep the floor dry, but it keeps them amused for a while.
Crafts Not for the faint of heart, but kids love to paint, glue, and decorate everything that will hold still. And the cat if he's napping.
Theater DId you think I was going to say organize a puppet show with a stage made out of a cardboard box? Yeah, I guess you could do that. Sounds like fun for a patient parent. OR you could take the stressed parent's tip and rent a movie from the Movies On Demand, pop some popcorn, and spread a blanket out. Hopefully you will get some time to return phone calls without constant interruptions....
Office My kids love to do this. Papers, paper clips, stapler (if you don't have one of the "staple-less staplers, I really recommend them. Walmart and Staples have them, about $3), folders, business cards. Keeps them busy for a long time.... If you have an old (or toy) cell phone, this increases the fun.
I hope these tips have given you some ideas of ways to keep your kids (somewhat) amused without losing your mind. I know it took me an hour and a half to write this because I had to break up some fights, refill some juice, deal with a broken toy, and put a band-aid on a non-existent wound, but that's okay.
That's what parents are for, right?
Stay warm!
We're closed in today in Downingtown too! I have my 7 yr old niece here, so it helps to have her entertain my 4 1/2 yr old! I hope to work :)
