Does Your Current Insurance Policy Cover Your Dog?

Wow..I learned something in our sales meeting this week from Ted Heaton with State Farm Insurance. Did you know your policy could be immediately cancelled or not renewed if your insurance company is not aware you own a “dangerous” dog?

What is a dangerous dog?

According to most insurance companies the following are the most common “Dangerous Breeds” or “Blacklisted Breeds”:

1. Pit bulls & Staffordshire Terriers

2.Doberman Pinchers

3. Rottweilers

4. Chows

5. Great Danes

6. Presa Canarios

7. Akitas

8. Alaskan Malamutes

9. German Shepherds

10. Siberian Huskies

11. Wolf-hybrids

Or a mix of any of the above

If you’ve been insured with the same insurance company for years, don’t assume your policy includes coverage for your dog(s). Insurance companies regularly modify what their policy will cover (and not cover). Your company may not know you have a “dangerous” dog.

Ted explained they can help you with a policy if your dog falls into the following categories:

Dangerous

Vicious

Potentially dangerous

Potentially dangerous

A public nuisance

A policy can even cover when you are away from the house which might be a good thing if your dog(s) falls into any of these categories.

Rules on which dogs an insurance company will cover and which they won’t, will vary from company to company. Some companies will cover almost any dog. But as a general rule, insurance companies tend to resist covering the above 11 types of dogs or any mix of these breeds. It’s best to do your research on insurance before making a decision on acquiring a dog(s). Better to be safe than sorry!

All insurance companies encourage responsible behavior and caution around dogs. Might be time to check your current insurance policy to see if your dog(s) is covered!

Have cats so not an issue with me. Some breeds like pit bulls can be an issue. As a landlord would never accect a pit bull. Insurance or not.

Dorie this is an important post.  There are many insurance companies that will not insure if the owners have a certain bread.

Instant reblog from this dog lover with this caption....Well, this is certainly interesting. Dog lover that I am, I have not even read about this insurance option before. Golden Retrievers are not on the list but it is good to know this concept exists as something that can be mentioned in conversation with Buyers to discuss with their insurance agent.

Dorie, this is a great post and my insurance company reminds homeowners every year to be aware of what is covered and what is not.  I believe this is a wake up call for many homeowners with aggressive large dogs.

Yes, it does, but many don't even mention a dog or dogs for fear they won't be able to get insurance at all.

Thanks for the info! I knew about most dogs on the list, but a few were new to me. We won't allow certain breeds In properties we manage.

I had no idea that there was such a long list.  I knew about pit bulls, akitas, rottweilers, chows and wolf hybrids but, the  other five are new to me.  I teach home-buyer seminars and we frequently have insurance people in to talk about home-owner insurance and they only cover the five that I already knew about.  The really sad thing is it is not really the dog, but the owner.  My oldest sister had nothing but mean dogs and they were all mutts.  I have never had a mean dog and don't think that I ever will.  Raising dogs is much like raising kids.  If you raise them well and socialize them properly, you will probably hove no trouble with either.

Dorie, this is great information to get out there. When I tell this to my landlord clients who have allowed dogs they are amazed at what dogs are on the list. Good thing for all to know!

I have a homeowner with a pitbull mix.  She was very frustrated when they relocated to Iowa in finding an insurance company that would insure them for their "dangerous and vicious" dog.  Talk about a sweetheart of a dog.  It is a shame that dogs are stereotyped this way.  I suppose that cars are insured the same way based on a few drivers that have been reckless.  It all balances out I suppose....but really, if the dog is friendly and happens to be one of those breeds, I think that there could be exceptions to the rule.  Thank you for the information, it is definitely worth sharing!
