NO PICTURES for this...

It's raining and there is no way to take a picture of the smell of wet, fragrant high desert... but if I could recreate the scent, I would wash my sheets in it every other day!!!!!

Why is it the most beautiful things in nature cannot be recreated very well in photography?  I have a theory - I think it has to do with the lack of emotion.  Maybe the smell that I smell in the rain is the combination of the scent of what is really around me and the lessening of anxiety created by the many fires burning in the desert southwest who are absolutely getting a little dousing by this rain event.  I hope that this is being shared by the Prescott, Yarnell, Mt. Charleston and Hualapai mountain areas.  Those communities could sure use a little relief.

The last few days have been unseasonably hot up here in Willow Creek, summer temps of 100 are rare in early July but we've had a few... today it is 75 - 80 and threatening to rain when it's not sprinkling... such a beautiful contrast to the last few weeks.  Come on up and smell a little rain and sunshine - this scent cannot be reproduced!  The sprinkling will make an ATV trip this afternoon a lot more fun - NO DUST!

Cheers and Peace out - I think I'll go sit in the rain!

Elsie, each of our senses have a unique benefit - and as a mankind we have devised few gadgets that help us 'feel' that. May be, soon we will have a technology where smell will go with pictures....who knows!

Looking For Homes With A Smile

Elise,

I am 66 years old, and I still pause at the scents of fresh rain, honey suckle, cedar, strawberries, and watermelon.  God put something special in those fragrances.

Additionally, I have come to pay special attention to children at play, rainbows, sunsets, all creatures of nature, and the way a smile makes all women more beautiful [it doesn't hurt men either].

Finally, I see a rare beauty in "please", "thank you", and "God bless you."

Be it in the high plains, low valleys, along the sea shore, or even a smog filled city: LIFE IS GRAND!!!  Working with people is a privilege, and taking a moment to appreciate anything sweetens the soul and lifts the spirit.

Thank you for calling "time-out" and granting us a moment to "think on these things."

Praful, I love technology... we will watch and see!

Gary, I'm gonna go all sexist on you... ALL MEN love the smell of a new car!  Maybe we have stumbled unto something here ... as a realtor showing homes to a "male species" maybe we should spray "New car scent" instead of "chocolate cookies"!!!!  ;)

Joan, We will thankfully take any moisture we can get this fall!!!!

Jill, Yes they make a "rain" scent... but they don't make a "High Desert Juniper tree" rain scent just like they haven't made a "Pines of Islip" scent - YET!  And I guess we hope they don't or we will also have a "arm pit of the big city" scent too!  I'm guessing that appeals to someone somewhere!

Cheers,

Fred,  You GET IT!!!!!  Yes I couldn't agree more... one more thing that truly warms my heart is a young person who stops to open a door for a stranger. Such a simple thing but it makes my heart warm to see it happen.  When it is done specifically for me I always thank them very specifically!  Thanks for a FABULOUS addition to my post - Cheers,

The smell of rain during a long dry spell is always sort of refreshing - even up here in the Seattle area.

Hi Elise-I know that smell well, I have a home in a Mexican desert area and when those seasonal rains start everything changes.

I usually enjoy the smell after a good rain, but this year it's been raining so much that I'm over it!

I agree with Patricia #12 - if only you could figure out a way to bottle that "freshly washed high desert" smell, you'd probably be rich! I love the smell after rain in most places - although in the height of a Southern summer, it usually just smells muggy. I'll wait for Fall to take the big, deep, cleansing breaths. :)

Thanks for all the sweet comments - it is refreshing to see that from coast to coast we can agree on some of the simplest things.  The same small tiny thing like a scent can make a difference in your approach to things because it is a temporary lift to your spirits.  Cheers everyone - have a GREAT Saturday!!!!

Hi Elise, I just found this through your FB page, it reminds me of my days of working in the Zuni Mts in NW New Mexico, and the cooing afternoon rains we would often get, just enough to cool things down and then back to the sunshine.

Thanks Bob -

We have been so blessed this year - we have received between 2/10th and 6/10th each day for I think 13 days.  That means it is all soaking in and EVERYTHING is green - such a treat for our desert!  BUT I can tell  you that it is a problem for me getting to appointments on time - I stopped FOUR times in four miles yesterday to take photo's!!!!!  I guess today I'll leave earlier!

Cheers and enjoy the season!
