Give your Customers a Lovegasm

Noah Kagan wants to help you give your customers a lovegasm. :)

Seriously, this is some pretty rock solid advice.

My favorite was coming up with your Hell Yas and Hell Nos.  Here is my list for Happy Grasshopper:

Hell Yas

  1. Be fun, friendly and helpful - Make sure people know you are there when you need them and always lend a helping hand when you can.  Until they're ready, stay calm, rock on, and keep in touch.

  2. Never forget the power of words.  They matter.  Use the right ones and you'll go far. Send spam and you'll end up in the garbage.

  3. Focus on Your Strengths, Outsource Your Weaknesses - We love that we've been able to help thousands automate their keep in touch.  Writing interesting keep in touch messages is our passion and we are so glad we get to do it every day. We are so glad we don't have to manage our own servers or worry about billing system -- it gives us more time to focus on the things we love.

Hell Nos

  1. Send email we wouldn't want to get personally - We call this the golden rule of email marketing.

  2. Treat friends like targets  - Those of us in sales know the necessity of making selling daily.  Just because we are ready to sell doesn't mean others are ready to buy.

  3. Be douchey - Come on, we've all done it.  What's the douchiest thing you've ever done to try to drum up some business? We've done some bonehead things over the years, but we always try to learn from our mistakes and get smarter.

Thanks Karen.  Embedding a video is super simple.  If you want to embed one from YouTube like the one I used just click on the embed link at YouTube, copy the code, then click on the HTML link in your blog post and paste the code where you would like it to appear.  If you ever need help, feel free to shoot me an email.

Celeste, Great post. How often should we send emails? I get some from some companies that come so often they have become just noise.

Hi Tom, that is a good question - and I think the answer relates back to my first hell no.

How often you send it a question of value.  If you are providing value don't worry.

Let's take a site like Groupon.  I love a great deal and I loved this site when it first got started.  It provided a wide variety of great deals at businesses that I was excited about.  I loved getting my daily emails.  Then the concept got worn out.  50 other companies jumped into the space.  Groupon was no longer able to cultivate the high quality uniquely interesting deals they once did.  I eventually no longer found value and opted-out.

Noah discusses this in the video as well.  Many people in the audience said they had opted-out of the App Sumo daily emails.  Again, this is because they stopped seeing the value in what they were receiving.

At Happy Grasshopper we prescribe a 3 week send cycle on our keep in touch messages.  This came out of a lot of testing and is specific to the type of messaging we are sending.

Our content has a few elements that keeps it highly relevant:

  1. It is highly relevant to the point in time which it is sent (ie - it isn't pre-canned, it is written daily)
  2. It contains queues to start conversations - Keeping People Engaged = Staying Relevant
  3. It is about friendship - not about selling.  If your content is about something you are selling and you send it to someone who isn't looking to buy you immediately become irrelevant.

Hope that clears things up - Happy Emailing and please - let me know if I can do anything to help.

Hello Celeste,

The Hell Nos made me laugh because as simple as they are to avoid, lots of people unfortunately still do them! Thank you for this fantastic blog post!

Words can have an immense, it's incredible! It's important to think about what you are about to say because what is said in the heat of the moment can definitely come back to haunt you, especially in emails. People seem to forget about the golden rule a lot though. Good post!

A new word with 'gasm at the end.  This seems to be a new thing in social media.

My favorite Hell's No is Don't be Douchey.  It happens and it is like a mallet on top of my head.

Great post thank you for sharing, not sure I like the word Lovegasam, seems a bit pushy and possibly out of line to use the word and the possibly meaning behind it. Although the young crowd appears to be drawn to anything that might posibbly do with knocking boots.
