Racism and Real Estate....Do you Have the Courage to Stand Your Ground?

By

Do you have the ability to turn down listings for all the right reasons? What if it's a really great listing, and it costs you a few deals in the process? Can you still stand beside your convictions and do what you know is right?

About a month ago, I made contact with a young lady who wanted to buy a home. She would be a first time home buyer and she was already approved for $150,000. I was happy to see that she was very serious and very motivated. So, I sat out showing her and her boyfriend properties that she was interested in and things were going great.

As I was showing her properties, she made mention of the fact that her father ahd decided to sell his house and buy a new one. Being the attentive Realtor that I am, I asked if had spoken with a Realtor. I was again happy to hear that he had not, and that she would be more than happy to put him in touch with me. As we were looking at one of the properties, she realized that we were around the corner from her father's house and asked if I would be interested in stopping by to speak with him about selling his house and helping him find a new one. Of course, I said I would love to.

This whole thing seemed to be going great. When we arrived at the neighborhood her father lived in, she directed me to his house. It was easily a $250,000 house as were the other homes in the neighborhood. Good for JL, a great listing and two buyers on top of it.

Well, her father wasn't home, but she assured me that he would work with me because he was so ready to leave that house. So, I asked how long he had been there and she said for just over a year. It seemed strange to me that someone would have such a nice house in a nice neighborhood for that short of an amount of time and want to leave so badly, so I asked why he wants to leave.

She said that when he first moved in, it was a great place to live, but after about four months, "blacks moved in on both sides of him and he didn't want to live there anymore". Unfortunately, she didn't even have do me the courtesy of saying blacks, but I really don't feel right writing what she did say in my blog, you get the picture. Trying not to show that I was a little shocked, I said excuse me. So, she repeated her previous statement.

I'm sure she had a very difficult time containing her shock with my response, and I would like to tell you what the look on her face was like, but I never looked back. I simply smiled looked at her and said, trying to keep my composer, that I am sure somewhere in this town there is a Realtor that would love to work with you and your father, but you have not found him yet. So, have a nice day. Then I just turned around, walked over to my car and left. It cost me three deals, but sometimes the money just isn't worth it.

I'm not naive enough to believe that people don't still feel that way, I just honestly don't encounter it that often. I know that this world will never be a perfect place, but ignorance is certainly not the answer to making it better. No matter what particular race, creed, color, or ethnicity of people you would like to avoid, the only way to do it is leave planet Earth. So, if don't plan to do that anytime soon, you may as well except the fact that we are all stuck here with you. Just except us for who were are, and hopefully most of us will do the same for you. But, like it or not, we're all in this together.

Good for You... I was living in your Town when Martin Luther King was murdered. Being from the North, I could not believe how it was down there (Racism & Bigotry) - Still fighting the Civil War, Hopefully Time has changed some things but not your Buyer & Her Father. You Did The Right Thing...

John- I'm glad to hear that you don't practice discrimination, no good ever comes of it.

Jane- Time has changed a great deal here in the South. I have lived here all my life and things are better than they used to be, but there are always  ignorant people who make things difficult for the rest of us.

Good job!  It takes courage to stand up and lose money, especially in this market!  I would hope that soon we would be able to put this nonsense behind us and realize that we are all just people!

JL - great job! I have been in a very similar situation. I too did not have to think about it for a moment. You absolutely did the right thing. But go on...try and describe the look on her face!!! :)

Way to walk away! Question, assuming you look at houses with buyers in your car, did you just leave her at her dad's house without her car?

Simon- I'm glad to hear that you agree and have done the same, it wasn't a hard decision at all to make. As for the look on her face, I wish I knew where to begin. I simply hope that I never see it again.

WoW! You walked away from a potential $15,000 - $20,000 and to accomplish what exactly? I have run across this issue also on various issues and I have asked myself one question, "by working with this person will I be compromising my values?" I have family members of different races and would have been extremely shocked to hear the "N" word too.

I would think that if you had simply informed the clients of your offense then maybe you could have actually made an impact. They will go to another Realtor and I am sure are pretty puzzled at your reaction. If you walked away because you saw possible fair housing issues in the future then I understand your reasoning. Maybe that would have been a good time to explain the fair housing issue and that you would not be able to work with them if they were going to talk like this or want you to find "white" neighborhoods.

In most industries you run across this. The difficult decision we all face I guess is where we put our foot down and where we walk away. I prefer to better understand where someone is coming from first before I pass judgement because taking one statement and running on that is not necessarily fair either. Regardless, you did what you thought was right and not on how much you could make - thats integrity!

Donna- I did not even think about that until I had pulled away, but I did just leave her and her boyfriend at her father's house without a car.

That's funny about leaving them there with no car and Dad not home.  I wonder which neighbor they asked to use the phone?

I applaud you JL for standing up for what you believe. Sometimes it can't always be about the money.

Jeff-It was simply my feeling on the matter alone that drove me to walk away. It could have caused some fair housing issues in the future, but I didn't even think of that at the time. As far as their reasons for feeling the way that they did, I can't think of any good reason to be a racist, so I don't think that whatever they were going to say was going to change my mind.

Thank you for the comment.

Mike- That's a good question, but I hope the neighbors were not home either.

Eugene- Thanks for the applaud, but I hope that I didn't do anything that most other Realtors wouldn't.

JL:

I applaud your convictions but did I miss something?  Racism is out there.  You don't have to participate in it.  I feel that if you would have taken the listing, you would have done more good in the battle to stamp out racism than the good you may have felt by walking away from the listing.  After all, in listing the property you would have had a chance to explain the fair housing laws to the seller and explain to him that you would sell his house to whomever, no matter what color they are.  At least you would know that your competition who might break those laws wouldn't get the sale.

As far as the buyer goes.  You refused to sell the buyer a house because she was a racist?  I would apply the same logic here.

Jl - I agree with you that most would never do what you did. Some people wouldn't walk away even if they felt the same way you did. I really dislike it myself when people are openly prejudice like these people were. It is disgusting behavior. I think most people would have let the $$$ rule their decision though.

Bill-It's no big secret that the $$$ seems to rule most people's decision. The truth is, I'm sure that they had no trouble finding a new agent.
