According to a study by McGraw Hill Construction, about one in five homes, or about 20 percent last year were “Green”. Yes, it would appear that “Green Building” is moving into the mainstream. Furthermore, some researchers are saying that Green Homes make up 29 percent of homes in the country, and predict by 2016 that new homes will be 38 percent Green.
Just about everywhere across the country, energy efficient home features are becoming standard practice among some new home builders. Many of these New Home Construction Builders see “Green” as a way to compete against those existing, or pre-owned homes, by boasting that their homes are a way for homeowners to save money on those utility bills. It’s a proven fact that those Energy Star Efficient Homes cost more money up front, but they all have lower utility bills.
Many homeowners have shown a willingness to spend more for green features, even in a down economy, and especially since real estate industry has been recovering across the nation. While the thirst for “Green Homes” is growing, buyers will have to pay more for it.
According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Green Homes cost about 5 to 10 percent more than homes that aren’t “Green”. However, materials and constructions costs for energy-efficient building are on the decline, which may soon open the doors more to green building. In addition, Home owners believe that “Green Features” will lead to a higher sales price 5 years down the road when they get ready to sell.
Home owners can expect to see higher sales prices when they go to sell those homes that boasts green features. Just last year, researchers at the University of California found that Green-Certified California Homes netted 9 percent more than a comparable house without the Green Label. Green-Certified single family homes sold for $34,800 more than comparable non-green certified homes, according to this study.
