It wasn't until two weeks ago, during a telephone interview with The Internet Marketing Center, that I recognized this milestone was approaching. When the interviewer asked me how Real Estate Shows got it's start, I realized that the timing of our Valentine's Day greeting templates was a wonderful coincidence. I've told my Valentine's Day story many, many times, but I've never written about it. This seems like the right time.
What happens when you don't hire a videographer for your wedding?
You end up with no wedding video. I know that seems obvious. When my wife and I made the decision to only hire a photographer to shoot nothing but black and white photos, we thought it would be cool and artsy. In retrospect, it was just short sighted. As the years passed, what we really wanted was to be able to sit in front of a TV, cuddle up and watch our wedding video. But we didn't have one.
What do you do when you have a lot of extra time on your hands?
If you're me, you play on the computer - a lot. And that's exactly what I did. I played with technology. During the months after I left my former company, I spent a lot of time researching and testing new software. I found an application (Mac only) that made the Ken Burns effect simpler to produce than iMovie and decided I'd use my newly found free time to make a Valentine's Day present for my wife - a DVD Movie of our wedding. So, I scanned in all of our old black and white wedding photos, hundreds of them, and made a five part DVD of our ceremony.
What happens when you present a gift publicly and everyone in the room cries?
If you're me, you enjoy the moment for about a minute and then a voice inside your head says, "hmm, why isn't anyone using this technique to present houses online?" As I watched the different parts of the video on the TV screen and judged the people's reactions, I realized that when you use the Ken Burns effect on inanimate objects, it feels a great deal like you're watching something shot with a video camera.
I played around with the idea inside my head for several months before deciding that this might be worth pursuing. I didn't register the domain name, RealEstateShows.com, until almost four months later, on June 3, 2003. It would be another 6 months of research and testing before any Shows, all hand made at the time, were presented to the first real estate group. After that first presentation, almost another year would pass before we felt we'd learned enough to fully define, simplify and automate the process online.
What happens when you really enjoy doing what you do for a living?
Time flies really fast. Five years have passed since that Valentine's Day present was popped into the DVD player. In the three years since we automated the service online, over 30,000 real estate agents have set up accounts at Real Estate Shows. I'm proud of what our team has created.
What do you do to celebrate five years?
I decided to memorialize this day by sharing one of the segments from the DVD that began as a Valentine's Day gift and ended as a business. Here it is.
Jeff, we didn't have a videographer at our wedding, just a friend taking camcorder pictures. My husband and I treasure that video and nothing made our kids laugh more when they were little, than to sit down and watch mommy and daddy get married. Congratulations on your five year anniversary of Real Estate Shows!
Jeff - you are a real romantic, aren't you? :)) What a wonderful gift. I think I would have cried if I were Rocky. It's such a tremendous way to keep the memories alive.
Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary! Your dream became a reality - both personally and professionally.
Fabulous show, love the black and white effect. Yes, I agree times flies when your having fun and love what you do. Wow, now it is a career and a wife.
Jeff - Great job creating something useful in your spare time. The wedding pictures did turn out great, and your product is very useful. I love your posts.
Thanks for providing such a great service Jeff. Also thanks for providing the link to Vimeo those were some fabulous vid clips.
Jeff on a side note I have a mini dv didital camcorder. Do most people just change the tape when it gets full? The Jvc really does not have an erase function. So I have just been playing around and have all of these small useless clips and thought that now that I have practiced that I would start recording. Problem is that when you download to windows movie maker it downloads all of the stuff.
Jeff, THANKS for sharing that great story! I always love hearing how the great ideas come to fruition and your story is such a perfect series of thoughts and events! Congrats!
Jeff thanks for sharing. My daughter is planning a wedding right now and thinks she doesn't want the video. I think I'll suggest she rethink that plan. So happy for you and your ventures. Congratulations.
Wow... you are amazing. How beautifully done. Could you give Al a lesson or two please. And Rocky with all that hair. She is a classic beauty hence why she looks good bald too.
I got all misty when I saw what I assume was the "box" and remembering the story Rocky told about the cigars..... :(
Thanks so much for sharing and have a fabulous day with you and yours! Oh and great story on the history of your company!!
Jeff what a great blog as always. I get so excited when I see you have posted something new. I love hearing how something great came to be. Happy Vday to you and yours!
What a wonderful gift, Jeff. Thanks for sharing this. And thanks for RES!! It rocks! I tell everyone about it when talking about blogging and real estate.
Jeff: Great show and I always love to know how imaginative ideas are born! I subscribed to Real Estate Shows a few weeks ago after seeing some posted by Missy Caulk and my seller's love them - really adds to my listing presentation. Just when I was doing the trial run, I found out that RE/MAX has a similar tool in their design center but liked this one better. However, I just now noticed the special offer for Active Rain members and did not join through that link - any way to honor the discount? Thought I would ask. Also, I have noticed that the pictures on the Real Estate Shows end up zooming into a particular spot that I might not have chosen - is there a tutorial to say what angle is best to take the pictures in the future - don't want to go back and retake them all. Thanks for your help.
That's asesome! What a romantic and creative gift! I love hearing these kinds of stories where something that is realized as a mistake (the not having a videographer) has put you in a place where you saw the need! Had you of gotten the videographer you may never have thought of the real estate idea...
What a cool story!!! You can say your company was started from the heart!! I was stupid and didn't pay the videographer either. Now I may have to make a RES!! Real Estate Shows rock. SO easy to create!
Jeff-great story and you both look so happy! To me the true California power couple! Amazing things happen when you do things from the heart...You guys rock and I do really like the black and white photo's. Happy Valentine's Day to your both and your children!
Jeff: Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us. It's just fabulous the technology that's available to us. I too had all my photos done in black and white... this is a marvelous idea. I'll take a journey with the links. Thanks again.
That is really cool, I had no idea where you got your inspiration from!
I must say I have to take something back from what I said to you in our first meeting in regards to men and aging. Rocky looks younger now than she did then and you look the same
:running out the door screaming why can't Mike do anything cool like this for me?:
Jeff, thank you for sharing such a beautiful day in your life...what an incredible ride you and Rocky have had and this is only the beginning! Congratulations on your success but more so on your contributions to making the world a better place. BTW, I think Rocky won the cake smearing contest:)
That's awesome! I dont have a video either! :(!! Wish I did, my photos arent good either and people say it was the funnest wedding ever.. I wish I had a more tangible way to remember it.. You did a great job with yours. Maybe I should take my yuck photos and do something similar! Great inspiration for all of us Jeff! Thanks for sharing!
Jeff, The story of RES is great BUT the show of your wedding is far better. You look so young and Rocky...well what can I say. She's beautiful and you are one lucky guy that she fell in love with an ole' country boy like you . Happy Valentines Day you two.
Congratulations on realestateshows five year anniversary. I've been using it for about a year and all my clients love it. Your wedding show was fantastic. Your wife is beautiful and you are a lovely couple. My Valentine and I are coming up on our 28th anniversary next month. Time flies.
Wow... love all of these comments. I know I'm going to miss someone in this response, but I want you to know I've read each and every comment. Thank you!
Renee... want me to come up there and kick his butt for you? Tell Mike I expect more!
TLW [SVW] and Bryant... I am definitely the lucky one. No question about that.
Lenn... eBay. :)

Karla, Elanor, Larry, Wayne, Alex, Elena, Maria, Midori... thank you as well.
What a wonderful show and a wonderful Valentine. It must be really great to know that your successful business stemmed from such a wonderful memory. Please share with us your Fifth Anniversary Real Estate Show!
Jeff - What an incredibly romantic idea. The most thoughtful and personal gifts are always the best. On a business note, it's great to hear of another person that tends to turn things into how can this translate to Real Estate. My mind is usually at work even during fun times and it can be hard to turn that part of me off when I enjoy my work so much. Good to hear that this has worked out for you so well.
Jeff, No wonder Real Estate Shows is so special...The inspiration was from the best possible place! Thanks for sharing the video. It was beautiful... & Rocky especially. :)
Jeff - Thank you so much for sharing the memories of a beautiful day and th beginning of an incredible union. One of my favorite JT quotes from Bogger's Connect SFO - "I LOVE my wife." Said with true conviction and that twinkle in your eye. What a lovely tribute to true love!
What a wonderful Valentine's day tribute to you and your wife. I thought the video was very moving and I thank you for sharing such a beautiful love story. Congratulations to you on your accomplishments... and a special thank you for encouraging me 1 year ago today to try blogging.
Jeff - I'm relatively new to the Rain & new to your blogs - but you never cease to amaze me with your content! I've got a lot to learn & you've been a huge help in my understanding of the blogging world. Thanks for being a giver, Jeff!
Jeff thanks for linking to www.muthahood.com . I am sick in bed and that just made me laugh out loud. I write a small post referring people to the link because it is just so funny and true.
Thanks...
WOW -DUDE... This is one of your finest posts, hands down..
Boy, how I wish I knew you back then. Check out Rocky -- All that hair and girly locks too.. What a great looking bride. You are such a great couple.
I know it seems like a bummer to not have a wedding video, but you know how to extract emotion out of the dullest photos and thats the magic behind your service.
I have only one question. Do you think Rocky will grow it out again??
Wow - I can honestly say the only regret I have about my wedding was I didn't hire a videographer. I never considered doing something like real estate shows, even though I have hundreds of fantastic photos. (What we didn't spend on video, we spent on the photographer). I now have a new project and if my video turns out even half as good as yours, I will be thrilled. Thank you for not only a wonderful product for real estate but also for all of the great ideas you share with us.
