Thoughts.............

Like a lot of Realtors, I have been working a 2nd job, at first for the insurance, now for that and the money!  I work as an emergency dispatcher here in Cedar City.  Snow is quickly becoming the bane of my existence as a dispatcher.  I work the night shift, and it never seems to fail, regardless of whether it is the first or last snow storm of the season, we have a multitude of cars that lose control and slide off of the road.

Speed is the main culprit, used properly it is generally possible to navigate the slippery roads safely to our destinations.  More often than not it is only a few miles per hour that make the difference in safe travel.  It takes practice and vigilence to maintain your speed at a safe level, it is very easy to think that you are doing well and you can go just a little faster.  The next thing you know, you're going sideways down the road prior to sitting down off the side of the road; if you're lucky, you there without hitting anything.

I think that this imitates what can happen to us in Real Estate.  The way that I think that it could apply to us in Real Estate is that sometimes we can get complacent or in too big of a hurry.  The worst that can happen is like our cars on slippery road, we can get ourselves into serious trouble if we don't slow down to make sure that everything is done correctly.  Something as simple as making sure that all of the disclosure forms are initialed and signed by both parties, or letting inspection or appraisal dates pass without protecting our clients with an extension.

It also happens when we get so busy that we forget that we are in a people business.  I have heard some say that this business is a numbers game, I don't agree with that.  We are in a relationship business, at least we had better be if we are going to last.  I guess that what I was trying to get to, is that at times, we need to slow down and make sure we are doing what we need to be doing.  Slow down and make sure that we are looking out for our clients, and make sure that we are finding and building clients for the future.

Have a great day!

I am fortunate enough to have insurance through my wife's company.  I am at the point now of thinking of getting another job for the money.  I need the job for the money but am afraid that I might miss an opportunity for a sale when working.  Not sure what to do.

Don't let anybody sway you from doing what you need to do for your family and still maintain your real estate career.  I am reading too much bashing of people who took 2nd jobs to get through this market and it is really starting to irritate me.

You both, Gary included, are honorable men who will do what it takes to continue to do what you love and take care of your loved ones.  I applaud you both.

I hope you get lots of rest and take care of yourselves.  The long hours will be over soon.

tony,

Very nice post. We are in the people business and must develop those relationships like you stated.

Very good post. A lot of people think real estate is easy money.  The problem is that it takes a lot of work to get your business going to where it is very profitable.

I think this is true in life, not just real estate, thank you for pointing it out as words to consider!

Very well said and I agree 100% that real estate is a relationship based business!

Hi Tony and Darcy, we have a saying in the south "Snow in the South is just God's way of saying 'Take the Day Off!' "

When I hear we are going to have a few flurries, I go to the grocery store and buy: Steaks, baking potatoes, wine, baked beans, chips, cookies, ice cream, hot chocolate etc, etc, etc.  Then we watch for the beauty to begin.

The weather in North Georgia is PERFECT!  A few days of cold, a few times of snow, absolutely wonderful Springs and awesome Falls and amazing Summers.

It's easy to sell homes here. Once people visit, they fall in love with our Mountains, Rivers and Forest.
