The American Institute of Architects revealed in an annual survey that more residential architects are being asked to design smaller residences.  Homeowners seem to be placing less attention of the amount of space in their homes and instead, focusing more how the space they have will be used. Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House:  A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live has advocated for sensibly sized homes that will not bankrupt a buyer at closing or drive a new homeowner into the red when it comes to paying heating and cooling bills.  Folks that have bought a large home now realize that size does not create a home with warmth and personality.  The key is to focus less on ego satisfying and bank account draining square footage and more on actual needs.   The Small House Society is an organization that actively promotes tiny residences.  What they share is the interest of owners in finding ways to reduce environmental footprints.

Clearly, drawbacks exist, but another benefit to downsizing is the extra money in your pocket!

I have a 3000 square foot home.  Having moved from a 1500 square foot I long for the smaller place.  It is just me & my husband and this is too much for us especially since the kids are gone & grown.
