Blogging...Getting Started Isn't Always Easy

I sometimes wonder how great books--and by extension movies and television shows--come up with that dreaded, but amazing, first sentence (scene). I wonder if it was always there from the beginning or if it took a lot of fine retooling before the first sentence came to fruition.

Fellow Active Rain Blogger, Bryan Robertson, asked an excellent question in one of his previous blog posts: "Should I blog today? how do power-bloggers stay committed?" and it's a fair one.

Sometimes it's hard to find inspiration, it's even harder to keep posting meaty information that will benefit the consumer, fellow agent or both, but you have to do it. If you're going to keep up with a blog, don't fill it with nonsense. Nonsense is good once in a while when you're getting into the swing of things, but it shouldn't be everything that your blog is about. That's just unfair to everyone involved.

Having said that, I agree with Bryan's advice that the first sentence is always the most difficult but, sometimes, the entire post is difficult as well. It's easier when you have a blue print in your mind of what you want to say.

Let's take a listing: You have to list the property, the features of the property, the neighborhood, the schools, provide research tools, etc. The general blueprint for the post is already there.

How about a funny thing that happened to you today? Start from the beginning and work your way to the end.

The general blueprint I've set for myself is:

  1. The blog post must make sense
  2. Have an intriguing title
  3. Have a catchy hook

Seems easy enough but it doesn't always go as smoothly, on paper, as I plan it.

The first sentence, should be a burst of information and creativity, but does it always happen? I can't say it does. In fact, I've sometimes written more than 100 words to find that the post isn't going to work, so I have to delete everything and start anew.

The first sentence is a mixed bag; sometimes it's magic and others time I wish I didn't write it at all.

Hopefully it hooks readers but, if it doesn't, then hopefully what I wrote does. I think that's my personal inspiration for blogging. The reason why I continue to blog. I want people to be informed, entertained but ultimately, captivated by what I have to say....

If I can't hold their attention on the page, how can I ever hope to in real life?

Phil, Your blogs are always interesting so you have definitely conquered the first sentence issue as well as the good content conundrum.

Helen & Larry, thank you! It always takes some time but eventually it comes together. There are some posts though that need a few days to refresh before I can fully write them.

Phil:  Some days the blogs just flow.  Other days?  Not so much.  On those days I think you're right ... it's just best to let them sit for a spell, then go back an improve them.  People DO pay attention and are reading what you write.  Why leave them with a poor or incomplete impression?

I'm learning from you .. keep the great posts coming!

Thank you for sharing this. I've been thinking the same thing recently.

It is sometimes hard to come up with interesting material and keep it meaty.

Alot of times it's an inspiration of the days events that provide my material.

Gene, thanks a lot! I know what you mean. Especially when you go back and read what you wrote and find that it lacks cohesiveness; it's nothing more than sentences pushed together. That's not a good feeling. When inspiration hits thought, nothing beats it.

Deanna, sometimes I have the spark of an idea but there's no meat on it. It's just the bone of an idea. Hopefully it comes together, if it doesn't, I usually save it and hope it comes together another day. Thanks for stopping by!

Phil~ I don't have as much trouble with the first sentence as I do with a catchy title. I believe that's the most important piece. Doesn't matter how wonder your content might be, if no one reads it, what good is it to anyone?

Donna, that is very true. The thing about catchy titles is that some people use it to mislead the readers to click on the piece. If you can find one that's catchy and relevant, that's awesome. I can't always say I can. Thanks for your comment!
