Do people REALLY want to imrove or Justify current actions?

Do people inherently want to improve themselves or do people seek confirmation for their actions and views?

Being somewhat of an idealist, I like to tell myself that all people want to better themselves, but the things that I see with my eyes and hear with my ears tell me that people simply seek comfort from others that their actions and beliefs are correct.

This is a question that I think of often especially when I am engaged in training programs or offering tips of advice.

Is it the fear of trying something new and not succeeding, the stubbornness of changing a habit or a routine, or is it procrastination?

What do you think?

Just Curious.

People won't change unless they're hurt by the way things are now, or they can see that someone who made a change has an advantage IMHO.

Kurt, Interesting question.  I believe some people are just afraid of change--even good change. So they don't make any; they don't realize it's a constant.

Curt,  The sad thing is that most people want validation for what they are doing - right or wrong.

Karen, That's true.  Good Point!

Carole, That is what I tend to believe also.  The unknown can be scary until you get to know it.

Marc, Good Point.  That is a huge motivator for most.  Once they learn to validate themselves, growth becomes easy.

One of my favorite reading materials are the books written by psychologists, which are usually stuffed near the self help section. I look over at that area, and I see a great many books, with a great many people standing by them. I was reading a work by an anthropologist in December, who pointed out that members of the community who exhibit a generous spirit are idealized by that society, since that form of being is what best helps the survival/success of all in that group. However, we have an inherent aspect of our character which leads us to place self above others, even when it is not in our best interest. That prelude is to clarify the fact that I think that given the chance we all would wish to improve, but we need to be shown why it is better for us to do so, otherwise, we will find a rationalization for our actions.

there are a good many people who do whatever they can to justify there actions rather then admitting they are wrong.  People have a problem with being self centered, it is all about themselves and they do not consider others.  i do believe there are many people who do admit when they are wrong, the great thing is many of them are here on AR.

I try to sign up for every class I can and read as much as possible, I feel if I stop learning then I might as well stop living. My mind has to want to continue to grow for me to grow as a person. It doesn't have to be real estate related, but learning in general is just good for the body and soul.

Thanks for the comment Todd!

I am the same way...if you aren't going forward, you are sliding backward.
