I dropped my daughter off at her daycare today.  They were having a Valentine's day party.  Imagine all the sugar-hyper 1-2 year olds bouncing off the wall.  Hopefully that means she will sleep well tonight!

I dropped by Walmart and saw TONS of roses on table after table for sale (they seemed to have the best deal I've seen). There were lots of folks buying too (mostly men!). The roses without a vase were $20.

I also went by Kroger on the way home and they had a special tent set up to sell to the last minute guys and gals for their Valentines.  The average dozen roses in a vase was $70.

A few days ago, I heard a radio announcement for proflowers dot com and they had a dozen roses for $29.99, I thought that sounded reasonable but what they don't tell you is that the roses and vase are $29.99 but there is a $15.00 delivery charge and a $15 priority Valentine's Day delivery fee and taxes and all of a sudden, a $30 dozen roses looked more like $70!

It got me to thinking...mostly about supply and demand.  Valentine's is the day that the most red roses are sold of any day all year.  There seems to be PLENTY of supply around this time of year, but the prices seem to be 3 or 4 times what you would normally pay.  Doesn't make sense as far as supply and demand go, but it's the way it's always been.

So how many red roses are sold on Valentine's Day?  Well, 57 percent of all flowers sold on Valentine's Day are roses and about 70 percent of those roses are RED ROSES.  The most consistent number I could find being reported is that 189 MILLION roses are purchased on Valentine's day every year.  A fairly significant number compared with a 1.2 billion total number of roses sold every year in the US.

Well, anyway, just some Valentine's Day 2008 musings!
