Living in New Milford, CT. What's so good about it?

I know what I think about living here in New Milford, CT, I love it!

I recently watched a news clip about life in West Hartford, a fairly affluent town about an hour plus away from New Milford. Residents were approached while walking in the downtown area were asked what they liked about living there. There were three answers that resounded from all questioned. While I was watching I realized that New Milford, CT has the same things to offer our residents that the people of West Hartford were raving about.

So I decided to do a little raving and bragging of my own about New Milford, CT.

Bank St New Milford CTReason #1. The vibrant and beautiful downtown area with all the shops and restaurants. New Milford has that for sure. We have one of the most picturesque New England style town greens that I know of, with shops and restaurants all along the town green as well as the other streets in downtown New Milford. Many of our buildings are getting a facelift and they look wonderful!

We have just about every type of restaurant you can imagine in the downtown area, Tex Mex, Italian, American, Irish Pub, Spanish, Chinese, healthy organic foods, fine dining and more relaxed style sandwich shops and deli's, indoor dining, outdoor dining, take out. All within walking distance of each other. We have ice cream shops, deserts and sweet treat type of places, coffee shops and a juice bar at the health food store.

For an evening out you can pick dinner and a movie or dinner and the theater.

Shopping more your thing? There are wonderful boutique stores, even a doggie boutique, a toy store, florist shops, a home store with a bit of everything, and yes, a good old fashioned hardware and lumber store. We have an interesting consignment shop where you can buy some of the greatest things for you home you didn't know you needed or have been looking everywhere for!

We have beauty shops, spas, tax and insurance people, banks and attorneys, a book store, a ballet school and theater arts school. And of course a few dry cleaners and a laundromat.

And if you want to come for a visit and stay a few days we have two great little inns downtown!

We have some great upscale office space that houses up and coming businesses as well as some very established businesses. And of course a few real estate offices (wink, wink) and a post office.

And we USE our village green all year long for some great events like Village Fair Days this coming weekend, a concert series in August, art shows, a farmers market on Saturdays, town wide celebrations, and much, much more.

Hope I didn't miss anything, but I bet I did!

So, we have the first reason covered. We have a vibrant AND beautiful downtown area.

Boating at Candlewood lakeReason #2. Local parks. Oh, yes, we have those too. We have MANY parks all through New Milford as well as a playground, skateboard park, tennis courts and ball fields downtown. We have parks for hiking, walking along the river, boating, for just relaxing, we have a great swimming area on Candlewood Lake for the town residents and parks along the Housatonic River. We have parks in all sections of our magnificent town, which by the way is 64 square miles of beautiful scenery. We have parks in the woods, parks, parks and more parks. We have learning centers for children and families to learn about farms and outdoorsy types of things, we even have a dog park!

The New Milford Park & Rec Department puts out a great pamphlet outlining what we offer for our residents, parks and programs and more. You can check it out here.

Check off reason #2. We have lots of local parks all throughout the town!

Reason #3. School system. I haven't had children in the school system here for years, but my oldest grandson is now in school. It has been the most amazing experience, I am thoroughly impressed. Of course I send my clients to the websites that rank schools themselves, but speaking to local residents who have school aged children is very important indeed. I am confident that our school system rivals many others throughout the state.

I am checking off reason #3. And by the way, our high school even has its own planetarium!

So, all in all you can see why I think New Milford, CT is a great place to live. And this isn't all of it either. We have many local activities, a variety of homes to suit just about every lifestyle. From modest homes to grand estates, subdivisons, condos, homes set out in the woods, homes along the lake and river, streams and ponds. All set in the wonderful town of New Milford, CT!

Andrea, New Milford is really old!  Like totally pre-colonial!  Maybe even older than most of Georgetown.

Pat, we do have a long history. The first "white" settlers came here in 1706. I often refer to a fantastic book written in 1883? by Samuel Orcutt called "History of the Towns of New Milford and Bridgewater, Connecticut, 1703-1882". It is free on Google books.

Nothing new here but the "new" in our name, LOL.

Margaret, why thank you, all the way around! It was funny as I was watching the news clip, I realized that we have the same and more, why not shout it from the roof tops!

Andrea ~ Just like everything else in life, if you don't love your city (or what you're doing) why are you living there? Great to read your love and passion for your city.

Kristal, thank you. I do love living here and I love watching all the changes happening in our downtown area. For a while I was worried, but not anymore! It is beautiful and vibrant. I am putting together some new photos to show everything off.
