Summer Safety: Pool Safety

It's summertime out here in Silver Spring, Maryland so I thought I would send out a few Summer Safety tips. Today's tip is on Pool Safety.

Pool Safety Tips

  1. Keep children supervised at all times. Children should never swim alone. There should always be someone within arms reach of small children. Inexperienced swimmers should wear floaties or other protective swimwear.
  2. Northwest Branch PoolKeep the pool clean. If it is a residential pool, keep it clear of debris (leaves, branches, trash) that can easily snag a swimmer. Make sure the water is tested regularly and has the proper chemical balances. Also be sure to maintain the circulation and filtration systems. These are things that can prevent earaches and skin rashes, among other much worse conditions.
  3. Pools should be properly secured at all times. Your pool should have a high fence or barrier with a self-latching gate. Always use a safety cover over the pool and keep the ladder or steps away from the pool when it is not in use.
  4. Set the rules and stick to them. There should be no running or horseplay around the pool area. This is the easiest way for someone to accidentally get pushed into the pool or slip and fall on the slippery area around the pool, causing serious injury.
  5. First Aid should be near by. A first-aid kit should be nearby, as well as easy access to a telephone in the event someone needs to call for emergency assistance. Nothing wastes more time than searching for a phone!

Have fun out there! Just be safe!
