Did you know your REALTOR is like your personal fitness trainer? Or Should Be?
Now think about it…
You hire a personal trainer at the gym to help you get in shape and keep you on track
- Your trainer wants to know your fitness goals, or even help you create them so s/he can help you reach them
- Your trainer educates you on equipment and exercises to achieve those fitness goals – after all, s/he knows how the muscles work, what exercises and equipment will work best for you, and so on
- Your trainer coaches you, inspires you, encourages you, corrects you when necessary, provide counsel, and answer your questions
- Your trainer is there when needed to make sure you are doing what you are supposed do, and not getting hurt by doing the wrong exercise or lifting those weights with the wrong form
Despite all this help YOU are still responsible for eating right (your trainer can give you suggestions but YOU put the food in your mouth, don’t you?), and getting to the gym for appointments with your trainer (and going on your own). And you won’t reach your objectives if you and your trainer don’t cooperate.
Sounds a lot like working with a qualified and knowledgeable REALTOR, doesn’t it?
A good agent will help YOU reach your objectives, provided they are reasonable. You may never become Charles Atlas, and similarly an agent cannot sell an overpriced home, or find you a property that is twice the size in an incredible location at the same price as homes half that size. Or help you obtain a home at 80% of market value. Unrealistic real estate goals will be met with frustration, like trying to build a sculpted bod in only 1 week where only flab and lousy muscle tone exist. It WON'T happen, no matter how badly you want it to.
Your agent will guide you through the process, providing information about what you need to do, things you should be aware of, and more. He or she will answer your questions, and provide solutions to problems, or give you alternatives (some times there are different exercises that work the same muscles and you decide what you enjoy the most). But there are still decisions YOU have to make and if you don’t do certain things then there will be consequences.
Oh, and just like being in bad shape and seeing a doctor FIRST to get a clearance before you start an exercise program…get pre-approved. Your loan officer is rather like that MD – able to give you a pre-approval to obtain a loan and buy a home. And if you aren’t in reasonable physical shape you shouldn’t start exercising too vigorously.
Hmmm, better get that check-up now so you can flex those muscles.
Most trainers won’t want to start working with you until they know you are in OK shape.
And those of you who are agents - isn't this how you want to run your business?
I like the idea of the "check up" to make sure one is "fit." A little credit improvement training may be necessary in this loan market. The process is a team exercise. Nice analogy, Jeff.
