Golf BagWhether you want to get in a round of miniature golf with the family, only have time to play 9 holes or want to spend the day on the links, Northern Virginia golf courses cover it all.  With both public and private courses designed by many of the most famous names in golf and with plenty of challenges for golfers of all levels.

Some of the names of the courses are familiar to many whether they live in this area or not and others might just be that new little gem that you may want to give a try the next time you get the urge to pull out that nine iron.  For military personnel Quantico offers the Medal of Honor Golf Course and Fort Belvoir has two 18 hole courses; Gunston and Woodlawn.  The Army Navy Country Club is a private club with two locations in Arlington and Fairfax.  Most members of the club are retired military from all services.

The Fairfax County Park Authority maintains eight public golf courses including two courses which have been named in the Top 100 courses to play in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Laurel Hill and Twin Lakes.  The Northern Virginia Park Authority maintains three courses and offers golf memberships for the serious golfers who want unlimited access to the links.Dad playing golf

For families who are looking for a little bit of fun or a place to entertain kids for a special occasion without the need for a full set of clubs then you might want to check out Upton Hill in Arlington or Cameron Run in Alexandria.  For the ultimate experience you might want to check out Top Golf in Kingstowne.  With 76 covered all weather suites equipped with the latest in computer technology you can play golf, practice your swing and keep score without ever actually getting your feet dirty.

If you haven't played golf before and are just taking up the sport you might want to brush up on your golf etiquette before hitting the links.   When you have perfected your game on the local Northern Virginia golf courses then you might just be lucky enough to play a round at Saint Andrews Links, the home of golf.

Cindy, a great friend of mine, Matt Kayson, is the golf pro at the 9-hole course at the Armed Forces Retirement Home here in DC.  They are now offering some types of membership to members of the community - you agree to volunteer with all kinds of fun activities at the Home.  It's a pretty course (they employ my neighbor's dog to chase their geese) and one of the city's best kept secrets.

Cindy-I've been toying with golf lessons and now I know where to start looking for a good pro to take me on.  Thanks

Cindy...Very informative post.  I've played at a couple of them when I lived up in NoVa.

Have you played the one at Quantico?  It's been a long time now for me, in fact I don't play anymore much to my husband's disappointment.  Fibromyalgia and chronic kidney disease are taking their toll (need to conserve my energies for my favorite hobby...my work).  If I ever played that course again I would demand a Medal of Honor if I could stop huffing and puffing long enough.

Have fun,

Kathleen

Patricia-thanks for that little scoop.  I wasn't aware of the nine hole course at the retirement home and I love the idea of the dog to chase the geese.  There is a lot of goose poop on local courses :-)

Kathleen-I haven't played Quantico.  Put me on a miniature golf course and I'll face down any windmill you throw at me.  Put me on a regular course and you had better make sure there isn't anyone around who will get hurt.

Northern Virginia has so many new courses - my husband plays on one about twice a month, and rarely repeats.  This is a great area for golf!

Margaret-it does seem as if every time you turn around you hear about a new course being built.

Hi Cindy:  I'm in the cold tundra that is Michigan right now:)...dreaming of the days of golfing in the hopefully near future.  We actually have some gorgeous golf courses here, too and a lot of new ones.  Just counting the days 'til we can be out on the course.

Bill & Barbara Jo-a definite must if they are building an over 55 community.  What are all the non-golfers supposed to do?

Cindy, I live in and work in Del Ray, Alexandria VA. Before I was a Realtor I designed for Alexandria Floral Co. I did many wedding receptions at the Army Navy Country Club. It is a lovely club with many amenities. Don't forget the Army Navy Cats! I remember some Junior Officers wanted them gone. It was the Senior Officers who came to their rescue. This part of the state is a great place to live.
