Social Media Blunder #1, Don't Forget To Write...I Did
Blogging is hard work.
You have to take time out of your day to pick a topic, write about it, edit it, embed videos, add photos, make it pretty, etc. The point is: it doesn't happen over night, not the good ones anyway.
If you're going to write a bad post then don't write any at all. Which brings me to my social media blunder #2, choosing not to blog after blogging for so long.
When I joined Active Rain in 2007, after receiving an invitation, I didn't even know you could blog on Active Rain. I thought it was a purely social/networking site for people in the real estate and mortgage business. I filled in my profile, looked around a bit, and didn't write my first blog post until June 2010. Almost three years later!
My first post was about Reverse Mortgages--The Next Subprime Disaster, or Baby Boomers' Savior? and just like that, little by little, I began blogging more. I also started to check out what others were doing--what they were blogging about, how they were doing it, and most importantly, who was successful at it.
I reached my peak in September 2010 and, after that, I never reached it again. Instead, I went on a downward decline until I had only written one post in May 2012 and nothing else for a whole year later.
I've recently started fixing my social media blunder because blogging isn't only about business, it's also a good outlet and platform to share your experiences with others and get some help along the way. We don't live in a bubble, and lot of what we have to say has merit, so why not invest the time in something is can potentially help your business grow?
There are many professional writers who always say "write something everyday" and, for me, this approach has worked.
Does this mean everything I've written about has been groundbreaking? No. But it gets me, and most importantly, keeps me, going and nourishes my need to blog. Just like any skill or activity, it has to be cultivated everyday and every little bit helps. Blogging is about invest and return, you have to invest your time to get returns on your business. No other way around it.
