Finishing Last…Yet Coming In First
I saw this picture and article on the Internet yesterday, and it really caught my attention.
It seems that Lance Cpl. Myles Kerr, and a few of his Marine buddies had signed up to run a 5K race in Charlevoix, Michigan last weekend. They had decided to run the race wearing their boots and fatigues, and carrying a full backpack.
Somewhere along the race, Lance Cpl Kerr came upon a 9-year old boy named Bolden Fuchs, who was also running the race. The corporal, who is just 19-years old himself, noticed that young Bolden had been separated from his group and was really struggling to continue the race. As Kerr started to pass Bolden, the young boy said to Kerr, “Sir, will you please run with me?”
With that, Kerr stuck with Bolden for the rest of the race, and helped reunite him with his family after the race.
For his efforts, Kerr…
-came in dead last in his age group with a time of 35:43…a full 5 seconds behind Bolden!
-was so late that his Marine buddies thought he had been injured.
As is the case with these things sometimes, someone posted the good deed on the Internet, and Kerr’s good deed generated a great deal of interest. Kerr, responding to well-wishers, simply responded, “ I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you!”
Each day presents all of us with an opportunity to be a hero to someone. You don’t even have to be a member of the most elite fighting force in the world…you simply have to invest a little time in someone. You just have to interrupt your race, and be willing to help someone run theirs.
