Social Media Mistake #2: Re-blog, Re-blog, Re-blog

Recycled Blog PostsAfter realizing my social media mistake #1, I started blogging. My first few posts were terrible. Although, I did my best, right from the beginning, to post photographs and provide valuable local information, it just wasn't working.

They were hyper-local and they were boring. Even, I was bored. I just couldn't find my blogging voice. As a result, I started re-blogging and re-blogging and re-blogging.

There was no way I was ranking in the search engines. My entire ActiveRain blog looked like a compilation of other people's posts.

You would see an occasional market report and the rest were re-blogs. I was posting but I still didn't get the whole blogging thing. What a waste.

Then it happened. In May 2010, I saw something in the MLS that got my blood boiling. It was in reference to a conversation I had with a seller two years earlier. I was so upset that I sat down to right the post, Unscrupulous Listing Practice?. After nine months of blogging, and blogging poorly at that, I got my first featured post. That post received 199 comments and to date has 8,100 clicks.

I was finally bitten by the blogging bug. I wish I could say all my writing dramatically improved. It didn't but, at least, the re-blogging stopped. To this day, I'm not a big fan of re-blogging.

I hate having to re-write my comment.

What I wanted to say is that I wish my posts were more related to Real Estate. I don't feel like I am. I guess I am the only way I can fix that.

Tammie, As Debbie Gartner says you can put your own twist on a re-blog and get lots of Google juice and ranking. I was just thinking today that Lenn Harley has mastered it. She expresses her opinion and it carries lots of weight. But I know many don't like the re-blog feature and think of it as duplicating someone else's material. I think of it as an extreme compliment and don't mind if anyone reblogs my posts. I even write them a note and thank them. Off now to do some reblogging. LOL

Sussie - It's okay not to write about real estate. I write about all kinds of things. Just make sure you have some real estate in there.

Debbie - I am testing this theory right now. I have recently re-blogged several of Debbie Gartner's hardwood flooring posts. I've sprinkled them with keywords. As of yet, I'm not seeing any benefit from the re-blogs to me personally. However, I was happy to see that when I Google Franklin TN homes for sale hardwoods, I had three spots on page one for my website.

I should re-blog this!  Ha!

I think the re-blog has it's time and place.  If it's all an ActiveRain member is doing, then EH.  If it's a part of what they're doing, then there you go.

Tammie~ I agree with Jared. Reblogging can be a nice compliment to your blog.

Hi Tammie - I agree. I usually only re-blog when it is a post that would fit nicely on my outside blog and be of interest to local readers. I just won't do it for points, since whatever I re-blog ultimately become part of my body of work.

Jared - I'm not totally opposed to re-blogging. I do, however, think a common newbie mistake is to re-blog other agents posts and then think you'll get Google juice out of it. Lenn Harley does it well.

Donna - I will occasionally re-blog. You won't usually find me re-blogging another real estate agent's post. Unless, they've said it so well that I couldn't convey it better.

Most of my re-blogs will be home inspectors, home stagers, lenders, flooring or other industries that buyers and sellers in my area may want to know about. These people are the authority and as such can contribute more to the subject than I can.

I recently re-blogged a post by Barbara Todaro in which she stated to buyers that if they come unrepresented into one of her new construction listings, they were going to get taken to the bank. I'm even going to put that post on my own website. How often does an on-site agent actually say this? Buyers don't believe us when we tell them this. So I'm saying, "Here it is right from an on-site agent's mouth".

I'm thankful that I was able to re-blog that post.

Dick - That is my take. I certainly don't want Franklin TN buyers and sellers coming to my outside blog and finding nothing but other people's content. They may begin to think, I don't have anything of value to add. I'm more likely to re-blog other vendor's content because they are the authority. When it comes to real estate, I want to be known as the local authority.

Tammie, I agree, I've never seen the point of re-blogging.  The only useful thing it offers would be if there was a really good post you wanted to share with your followers who may have missed the original.  And of course not everything we write will be a hit, but try try again.  Feels good to have a featured post.  Congrats on that.

Matt - It can be a bad habit for newbies to fall into. I always suggest to write your own hyper-local post with similar information rather than re-blog. However, Debbie Gartner writes some great information about hardwood flooring that my local buyers and sellers would find beneficial. She is probably the person I re-blog the most. Closely followed by lenders, home inspectors and home stagers.
