What a great Shark Day, not too much to read, plus pieces of education and entertainment to boot. Tomorrow I'll be off to see some more Shark Week on The Discovery Channel and learn some more about them. I hope you enjoyed your day at sea. I know I did! The following scenes are from JAWS 2 and really don't depoct Shark behavior that accurately. I do agree with Roy Scheider's assessment of the situation while in the original JAWS when he stated, "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" Then Eddie, well, he did need to swim faster, but humans don't do so well with that. Michael Phelps clocks in at a blistering 5.25mph, expect average humans to be at 3 or less. Almost all sharks can hit 35mph in a sprint whereas Mako Sharks have been estimated to attain almost 70mph in short bursts of 200 yards or less. Maybe if we keep messing with sharks in their environment evolution can throw us a bone and get us up to speed. 70% of the Planet is covered by water, without it we would not survive. Please make sure you use it wisely and sparingly. Thank You & Good Night, sleep well if you can!
Gabe, the sharks don't scare me half as much as the algae bloom you're experincing near there.
Kevin, i have watched shark week all week...i tell you i had no idea how fast they swim. I'll never go in the water again!
Ginny, you and I both know you'll be body boarding again. When the bait fish start jumping around you then it's time to GET OUT!
Kevin- our first hot tub was a wooden one that held 1100 gallons of water. When we would get in it at night, I always had that opening few notes from "Jaws" humming in my head.
Kevin - And this is why I don't go to the beach :) that and the sand that stays with you for weeks.
Kathy, back then I was an ocean lifeguard and with about 25 of us we saw the premiere. Our moonlight rows in the early morning took on a whole new perspective, right down to the very similar mile buoy. It took some others a few weeks before they'd chance a swim again, either bay or ocean. I'm certain those notes still haunt them too!
Michelle, it's a funny thing, I really love the beach but at the same time hate the sand. Most likely for the stick-to-it-iveness you mention
What amazes me is those who go for a swim at dusk when that is shark feeding time!!! We had a resident in our county jump in when he got home from work, right in his backyard - into the intercoastal - and into the jaws of a bullshark. Common sense MUST be used when you enter the water and dusk is NOT the time to go in!
I love shark week! I still go in the ocean and the last time I did I got stung by jelly fish. Cabana boy offered to pee on me (he said it loud enough to get a giggle out of the hot young chicks sitting next to us!)
What great music and it evokes fear every single time. Ocean is beautiful for looking at!
I too am a fan of lessening the odds Barbara Jo. We had a home near Boca Grande and bull sharks and hammerheads get pretty beefy near the pass. At the end of our dock a 10 to 12 foot bull shark was observed meandering by. I've also had a couple of large tarpon hooked there that when they leaped they came back to the water half the size of their former selves. Those silly sharks like to jump too!
Your Cabanana Boy was an excellent help Renee but for future reference that treatment is ineffective at best. It's audible nature was well worth the price of admission, however, I cannot recommend the show, unless his accent was perfect.
Margaret, with JAWS the theme music literally grabbed at you. Then there were Land Sharks, do you remember those? Either predator would almost always force a glance over the shoulder whenever those notes were heard.
Yes, Kevin, we are having some serious issues with the discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Hopefully the long planned solution will finally be implemented.
Catte, sugar cane, citrus and population growth don't seem to mix well with water Gabe. You would think that it would under such scrutinized conditions.
Patricia, don't fret, the odds are that you'll win Powerball before a shark ever bites you, let alone kill you. Get out there and surf!
