Part two of my response to Debbie Reynolds' wonderful idea and challenge, What We Have In Common - Getting to Know Each Other Better. Some of you may know these things, others definitey will not.
Ten Things About Me NOW That You Might Not Know
1. I live on 55 acres in the country with 4 Morgan horses, 7 cows of assorted sizes, 3 Donkey Girls, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and numerous rabbits and skunks and coyotes and birds and other wildlife. I'm a real estate agent in part because of our experiences looking for this place 20 years ago.
2. The ranch is on an immigration route so we have all kinds of birds from red winged blackbirds by the thousands to whooping cranes flying through and stopping off for the night.
3. My roots are planted deep in Texas soil. I'm a fourth or fifth generation Texan through several lines; my ancestors fought at San Jacinto and were instrumental in the founding of the state I love.
4. I have a small collection of quilts. My favorites are the traditional Amish quilts with their vibrant use of color, rather than representations of actual objects in fabric or pattern. They are useful works of art; what's not to love?
5. I love sculpture. Unlike the art of quilts, which are a sort of living art, sculpture represents real things frozen in a moment in time. Not so crazy about abstract sculpture, unless it moves.
6. My house contains too many books. WAY too many books. That's because I believe deep in my heart that no one can really have too many books. I never go anywhere without taking a book with me, because it maintains my sanity if someone is late or I am early and I have to wait, or if the car breaks down and I have to wait for AAA, or any other such occurrence. Reading, experiencing other lives and other viewpoints, soothes my soul.
7. Speaking of soothing souls, there's cooking. I thoroughly enjoy cooking and the interaction with food and tools and stove, the dance from planning the meal to getting everything on the table at the right time, and then the pleasure of eating alone or sharing with others. And I know a well-designed kitchen when I see one!
8. A so far unfulfilled goal of mine is to become a really good photographer. That would require a really good camera and time to practice. It's on my bucket list; everyone should always have goals no matter how old they are, because when you no longer have any goals no matter how small or large, you've lost interest in life.
9. I have no tattoos. Not because I dislike them, or think there's anything at all wrong with them, but because whenever I considered getting one, I always thought, “What if my taste changes? What if I choose one and then want something else?” So I don't have a tattoo because I can't decide on one I know I'd want to live with forever. Go figure!
10. On the other hand, I've been married for 41 years and am looking forward to the next 41. So I CAN make a commitment!
