Do You Know How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes & Not Risk West Nile Disease

Do You Know How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes & Not Risk West Nile Disease

Did you know many people have gotten sick and died of West Nile Disease in the past 13 years?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 30,000 people in the US have been diagnosed with the disease and over 1,200 have died. Not all cases are properly diagnosed so the odds are there are many more cases and more deaths.

What is the mosquito’s active season?

From April to October yearly is the active mosquito season. The freezing weather kills off the disease.

What time do they actively bite?

Typically from dusk to dawn but there is a few that will bite in the day time.

Where do the mosquitoes normally lay their eggs?

They do not need a whole swimming pool but just a cup of water will serve their needs. You can find standing water in old tires, water spouts, bird baths, toys or flower pots in your yard and of course the pool or spa in your yard.

So they just lay eggs into the water?

No, they like to find the edges of the body of water where there is mulch or grass to hold the eggs until they hatch.

How long does it take for eggs to hatch?

It takes approximately 10 days for the mosquito eggs to hatch.

How does the disease typically spread?

Birds normally carry the disease and hurricanes and strong winds carry the birds to new areas.

 How does WND spread?

Mosquitoes bite humans and birds.

Are there things I can do to reduce the chances of getting mosquitoes and the West Nile disease?

1.     Put yellow bulbs in your porch lights which tend to deter mosquitoes from flying by the door.

2.     Inspect your yard regularly and make sure there is not any standing water.

3.     If you have a lot of mosquitoes, call a licensed pest control company to come out and inspect.

4.     Stay inside from dusk to dawn.

5.     Use a good insect repellent to deter mosquitoes.

6.     Wear protective clothing.

7.     Do not handle dead animals without using gloves and wash your hands afterwards.

8.     Most cities or counties want you to call them if you find a dead animal and they will send someone to remove it and test it for diseases.

What are the odds of getting West Nile Disease?

Typically 1 in 5 people who are bitten by a mosquito might come down with the disease. Of this number, 70-80% will not have any symptoms and never even know they had it. A few might experience more symptoms; aches, headache, neck stiffness, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than 1% might develop more severe symptoms like encephalitis or meningitis and these people will need to be put in the hospital and treated. There is no vaccine or pill to take to rid yourself of WND.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 30,000 people in the US have been diagnosed with the disease and over 1,200 have died. Not all cases are properly diagnosed so the odds are there are many more cases and more deaths.

Prevention is the best way to stay healthy from getting West Nile Disease.

I use pellets called Mosquito Bits that I sprinkle into areas that collect water.  Doesn't seem to bother plants or animals, just mosquitos.  The best deal is through Amazon.  The local home improvement stores sell the same product formed into mini-donuts for much more money.

Hi David, WNV is not a good thing and can kill wildlife and people but making sure there is no puddles, pots or ponds full of mosquitoes, is a good way to keep the numbers down. Thanks for stopping.

Hi Marge, That is a good idea and I buy some stuff for my fountain which is running most of the time anyway but it would still get green without the liquid. I tried the squares but they didn't work. Liquid Algaecide is the best.

Hi Silvia, Yes they can be attracted to the shore but I am sure the wind keeps them away. They like to try to get inside at night when I leave the french doors open.

Hi Liz and Bill, I have a hatred of mosquitioes as when I was 18 yrs, I came down with viral encephalitis (contagious) and had to stay in the hospital for 10-14 days. I did not get bitten but exposed to someone who already had it. Found out through County records that a student at the same college had gotten it and passed it off to a nurse at a different hospital they were in.....they both died! Even though I did not know him, I must have come in contact at school. I was glad to know I had not been the one to pass it on to the nurse. I was sleepy and a little dizzy for 6 months and had to take Dramamine 3-4 times a day for months. They say I have an immunity to it now????

Hi Jay & Michelle, We need to do our backyard observations every 8-10 days to keep them at bay.

Hi Pamela, Yes that is the biggest concern in our area of Southern California too but not as many REO's so that is one good thing.

Hi Ed, You are absolutely right! Thanks for stopping and the support.

Hi Gail, Yes rain and humidity draws the mosquitoes to the area. We do not have much rain right now but a few mosquitoes anyway.

Hi Myrl,  Thanks for the support as it is important to get the word out so we can all try to control the spread.

Hi Sharon, Above I responded that I had had viral encephalitis and the doctors told me I would be immune if ever bitten by a mosquito with encephalitis. Who knows for sure?

Hi Tom, I can relate as I had a fairly mild case at 18 yrs so very lucky to have survive with no aftereffects. Very sorry for you and your friend.

Hi Jimmy, I did not know that fact either until my research. I thought they just floated on a leaf in the water.

Hi Joan, You are so right as we must do want we can to keep them from spreading. Thanks.

Hi Lloyd, This is great information as the squares I buy for the fountains do not work and the water still gets greeen and the block of stuff never dissolves.

Hi Bob,  If your forest is dry, probably not a problem as they like the wet and humid areas. Thanks for stopping.

Hi Praful,  Glad you do not have any real problems in MA but keep it in mind for vacations. Always need to be careful.

Hi Cheryl,  That would be an interesting post as I have never thought of making my own. I just buy the bottled stuff.

Hi Wayne & Jean, Glad you liked my post on West Nile Disease. It is a nasty disease.
