Drought in Central Texas- Interview with LCRA August 10, 2013

I had the pleasure to sit down with one of the top LCRA staff and visit regarding the drought that central Texas is having. The main focus was about watershed in Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan and what to expect in the coming months.

The focus was the Drought of Record that occurred and is the benchmark in the years of 1952 through 1958 when Lake Travis was at its all time low. This is what the LCRA focus on and determines the emergency measures of what happens next. Of course the Lakes are at record lows currently and the farmers down south are not getting any of the water. I found out that Bastrop is on well and does not take water from the Colorado river.

Currently Lake Travis is dropping about 1 foot a week. Lake Austin will not be lowered this year. Lake Travis is primarily for flood storage and Lake Buchanan is for water supply which is very low now. What is occurring is the Pacific ocean is cold and the Atlantic is warm and this is the same thing that happened in the 1950's.

The best source for getting more details on the lake levels is  www.Hydromet.lcra.org and of course www.Lcra.org

If you considered a time to buy what used to be Lake Front now is the time with home and land prices down. The Raesz Team with Keller Williams Realty has been helping buyers and sellers since 1986 and we can share our experiences and talent.

David, sorry to hear about the weather situation in Texas.  I know the Chicagoland suffered somewhat of a drought last year.  I sincerely hope things turn around in your area.
