The Purpose of My Garage

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Regal Realty of the Treasure Coast LLC

Many of use do not use our garage for our cars but for storage

I see homes after homes loaded with stuff.  Stuff people don't use, forgot they had or no longer care to use.   Some use the garage as extra living space whether is it is permitted or not.

My thought is if you use your garage for storage then I believe you just have too much stuff.  If you have not used the items within the past 2-5 years it is just plain junk.  I say get rid of it and DE clutter your life.

I do use my garage for my car.  The use it was intended for.  Why because it is safe.  My own neighbors of whom I know them all, call me before coming over they are not sure if I am home.   That tells me I have increased security for my home especially during the days.  With burglars being bold enough to invade homes during the day this is comforting to me.   New friends come to my home and call me from the driving way wondering if I am home because they do not see my car.   When I let them in the door they think I have a car problem.  No I just have my car in the garage.  they seem surprised.  (This means they keep their cars out side.)

Keeping your car in the garage protects the body work and even the engine.  It keeps them both cleaner, by not having to weather the elements.

Keeping your car in the garage lowers your insurance premiums.

keeping your car in the garage gives thieves one less vehicle to break into or steal.

Keeping your car in the garage raises questions as to whether your are home or not.

Think of how many times you have driven past a home of someone you know and acknowledge that the person was home or not.

My advice, use your garage wisely.  It is there for your security.

The most important home I sell is YOURS!

Garage is a must have.  I see it all the time, people parking a $50,000 car in the driveway while they store $1000 worth of junk in the garage.

I am with you Debbie.   When I am out and it raining I say I just need to get to my car and once in I am out of the rain because I disembark in my garage.

Kevin, that is where I keep my signs and Christmas lights too.

Travis, I will check out George Carlin.  I promise I have not been talking to your wife.  Would you like me to. LOL!!!

I understand Gene.  We don't normally have basements in Florida either.

Lisa, that is so interesting.  It is kidda like Gibbs on NCIS.

Kerry, here in south Florida, it is hot in the summer and cooler in the winter.  In January it is cold for a few days.

Lyn it must feel like a breath of fresh air.

Harrington, decluttering does make you feel lighter and you can think more clearly.

Kimo, let me know how you get along.

Jeanne,  I just do not understand why people would do that.  Your car and home are usually the 2 biggest investments you make.  Take care of them.

We have a carport so we have to keep things to a bare minimum and that's ok with me. We would like a garage but I told the husband, It would have to be very big if he wanted a work bench and big enough for his truck (an F-150 with and extend cab and bush guard and 8 ft. bed) and my Jeep. I know a lot of people with big beautiful homes who can't put their vehicles in the garage because of all the crap they haven't "seen or used" in years. Those homes also have pest control visits periodically. They also have to wash their vehicles more often because of the bird feces and tree sap and such. yep and as mentioned before most people know when you're home. And like Jeanne Gregory #10 stated. Makes absolutely no sense.

Last month we had a house fire that started in the garage where my car was safely stowed away... my husband's truck that was in the driveway is fine, my car is totalled :(

Get the word out - you need a smoke detector in the garage, too!

I'm with you on this one: those garages are often filled with forgotten, not needed any more junk. Why would do you do that? Why do you store things that you know( deep inside) you'll never need? Here in Valley, the majority of garages are.....storages, cars are outside....

Great reminder, we moved from a larger home and a lot got put in the garage.  We are slowing donating or giving away things we haven't used in the last few years.  I would love to park my car in the garage, especially in the winter.  From a selling point a packed garage only tells a buyer you don't have enough room.  There are many really nice storage companies in my area some with free trucks to use for their clients to keep the things you just can't part with.  Why live with clutter...

We moved about 6 months ago, and as I am sorting those boxes in the garage, I am amazed at the crap we moved! I think I need to bring in a dumpster and just toss. Oh wait, gotta wait til the husband is gone. The junk is all his, the treasures are mine!

Oh Merline, I think the greater majority of folks in my local area at least use their garages for storage. I used to think this was because we do not have basements, the usual place to store stuff. But you have hit the nail on the head, I think most just have too much stuff!
