Trying to keep up with your blogs while you are on vacation can be a daunting task.  Not that I have been on vacation anytime lately. But if I ever was on a vacation, I would want my blog to post while I was on vacation so my readers wouldn't miss me. I stumbled upon a post that showed me how but forgot to book mark it so they would get some link love.

You always worry about losing your traffic because you neglect to post on your blog...now you don't have to worry...just do it ahead of time.

Here's how you do it.  First and foremost you have to write your post ahead of time.  We'll keep it simple with one, but it works for multiple post.

  1. Write your post.posting to a future date now
  2. When you  are done and ready to save, here's what you do 1st. (very simple)
  3. Edit time stamp box to the date and time you want to automatically post
  4. Click Publish on the Post Status Section
  5. Click Save (NOT PUBLISH)
Wahlah...your post will automatically post on the date and time that you save it.

NO WAY, Bob!  That is WAY too cool!  I'm really excited to know that because I have several blogs in the making and it would be a great idea just before leaving for a long weekend or vacation as you suggested!  THANKS!

Bob - I'm just getting started with my Wordpress blog.  I learned about this feature this week.  This is a great way to get consistency on your blog.  That's key in getting googlejuice.

Bob, you're my hero. I should have used this feature to time release blogs in the middle of the night so you would twit them. :)

Genius Bob, fantastic. Do you think it would work if I use blog jet? I'm thinking write it in blog jet, send it over and then change the time stamp.

Bob - Thanks for the great tip.  I would have never thought about it.  I just try to make sure I post before I go.

I have published mine ahead for a long time because I do it on my other blog too.

  • Click Publish on the Post Status Section
  • Click Save (NOT PUBLISH)
  • I think though I just change the time stamp and click publish...on the blog it does not publish until the date and time....

I've just done like Maureen. Post date and publish.  It's always popped up when its suppose to be.  It should be a heck of a surprise as to when that gynocological post shows up.  Carney, I will wrap my boney fingers around your throat!

Debe glad I enlightened your blogging experience.

Marlene, how are you... Get crankin' on that blog.  You will be pleased with the flexibility of your stuff!

Chris, THAT blog was supposed to go off at a certian time...around 28 days.  So you have known all along???  Here I am posting from my Motorola Q in the bathroom so my family does know I am blogging while on vacation...

Missy,  Not sure about blog jet. Can you save it to your blog without it posting?  I haven't tried blogjet yet.

Vincent, Glad I made you think.

Maureen, The tip I came across said save...so it will work with publish too.  Good to know.

    Kim, http://wordpress.com its free...get crackin'

I love this feature because I can have my blogs post when I am out of town. Also, if I have two or three great ideas for posts I can stagger them instead of just throwing them all up together. Sorry for the visual there. I have been using Typepad for two years now, which also has this feature, but I have recently started a blog on WordPress and really love the plugins.

Connie, One thing I don't understand about typepad is that you can't have your domain on their servers.  Or can you?  It seems that every typepad blog is bobsrealestate.typepad.com instead of bobsrealestate.com
    9:07pm • #11
You have to domain map it. I have about a dozen blogs on Typepad and they are all domain mapped. I teach technology using teleseminars and that is one of my most popular topics. It only takes a few minutes to implement and then you wait 24-48 hours for the CNAME to change over. Then it is mapped forever.

Thanks!! I have done this in livewriter but not directly on wordpress. I wish I could say I planned ahead and wrote 7 extra posts for my vacation next week, BUT, nope.  I am crossing my fingers I can get the internet work where i will be at!

Bob, Thank you for the information.  I am new to bloggingbut I can see where I could use this in the future.

Connie, Thanks.  I didn't think it was possible since the Real Estate Tomato doesn't map theirs..plus all the other typepads I have been on.

Cheryl, MAY 07 I was knee deep in Wordpress.com back then and still green.

Ginger, I wish I could plan that far out too.

Jimmy, In a few months it will seem like a life time...good luck and stick with it.

Bob:  I am about to start my new blog and was told that Wordpress is the best "free" way to go right now - so it is good to know this going forward - now I have to take that first step to get me going.

    Hey Bob,

I'm not that clever to want to write a post so far ahead of time to put a timer on it to launch later...but i guess it's a good idea if you have something to say but want to wait to release it. I write my blogs on the fly...so if I think of it right now...I'll posts it....rarely would I leave it in draft to hold of posting it. Thanks for the tip!

Mary Pope- Handy had suggested this feature be added to AR long ago.  They said no, or not in the forseeable future.  I wonder why.

I hope their outside blogs have it.... not that I am going to do one of their outside blogs... probably...

Bob - Make sure people understand the difference between the paid and free version of WordPress. There is a HUGE difference! It is easy enough to install a theme on your host server and get all of the benefits.

Connie,You're right there is a difference Cheryl does a little explaining here about the difference.

Maureen, I am sure they have their reasons.

I see significant benefits from both pre-posting when you're going on vacation, and delaying post when you'd have a spurt of writing. Wish this was a possibility in our Active Rain posts.

Sharon, Another benefit I can see is if you are on a roll writing a long story or article... you can break it down into smaller post to create a series and shoot em out on a delayed basis...teasers you know.

Did I hear Chipped Salmon  was being served on bagels this morning?  I read that last night at hockey surrounded by my gaggle of PBG'ers and thought it wasn't right.  Since I'm from "over there" i wasn't sure.  Wait, I'm from over there with Cleveland Carol!

Wow, this is neat.  I skipped the comments to comment, and am wondering if I should read the other comments...chipped beef, chipped ham, and chipped salmon sound pretty gross.

I do have a wordpress.com blog - not one on my own website but one of theirs.  I haven't done as much with it as I would like as I haven't had time, but hopefully this tip will work with their free blog?

Cool tip - will this help me displace other posts - change the order of an older post? That is one thing I would like to do - the other is replace "just another wordpress.com blog" blurb...is that possible? Thanks for the info here!

Yes, you can reorder the sequence by changing the dates on the post. Just edit the date.

Thanks, Bob. I am one who has 'spurts' and then times when I don't have time to write. Also, as you pointed out, it would help the long ones so they wouldn't be so wordy.

Good luck.  The interface has changed a little bit (they made it easier) on Wordpress but for the most part the idea still happens.
