moneyRecently we needed ink cartridges for one of our printers.  As I was in the Fredericksburg area I stopped in Staples.  They had the products I needed and home I went.

Later, while on the computer, I decided to check out the same products on officedepot.com to compare prices.  The difference was almost enough to make me wish I had driven about three miles more (what's three miles in a Toyota Prius Hybrid) and gone there.  Still curious I decided to check out the same items on Amazon.com.  To my delight* the prices were even better.

Below are the items and the cost.

  1. Canon PGI-5 BK 2-pack black ink tanks and
  2. Canon CLI-8 4-pack multicolor in tanks

The cost at Staples, where I shopped, was $84.21.  The same items would have been $81.48 at Office Depot and the winner is...........................Amazon.com $67.33.  Yes, I would have had to wait two days (free shipping and no tax) but if you have the time, why not.

The difference from what I paid to what I could have paid was only $16.88 but that was a 20% savings on a small purchase.  Not bad and that could have been accomplished from the comfort of home.

The reason I am sharing this is that I have found the savings to be there with almost any item I have purchased and they have run the gamut (digital cameras, printers, books, videos, coffee pots, toaster ovens and on and on).

Some folks think it is merely a place to buy books and perhaps some videos or Cd's.  I have found it to be a place to save on many items I use in my business.  Perhaps you will also.

*I own a very small number of shares and that is because it has been my "go to" place for years.

Kathleen,

Good to know.  On my next office purchase I'll compare the prices on Amazon.  Thanks!

Have a nice weekend.

Michael...I'm sure it will depend on what your are purchasing but I've been pleasantly surprised over and over again.  Hope it works for you also.

Thanks for your comment.

Kathleen, I love Amazon.com, they always have the best prices on DVD's and free shipping over $25 on many of the items. I order a lot of homeowner gifts from their site and it just takes a few days to arrive.

I buy recycled cartridges...they are an AWESOME price, the place I purchase them from guarantees each and everyone.  I've only had one incident in 3 years that I had to take the cartridge back.

I love amazon. I have learned to shop around for every purchase to save!  And you're right, people usually think of amazon for books, but they have everything! Another site that I like to use to bargain shop is bizrate.com..  Thanks for sharing.

Debbie...I'm glad that you've had the same experience that I have.  It's amazing the variety of things you can buy there.

Cheers,

Mary...Please share the site with us.  I have only had one experience with recycled cartridges.  It was not a very good one but than that was some time ago.  I'm game to try again.

Thanks,

Kathleen

KATHLEEN - I compare most purchases like that online.  It's very easy to do a price comparison, and also to see if it's worth it to even go to the store.

Kathleen ~ I never would have though of Amazon for office supplies.  This is good to know.  The savings on the items, and gas, makes it worth ordering ahead of time and having it shipped.

Kathy...I always try to keep a backup supply on hand so generally the wait of a couple of days is not a problem.  If my order is over $25.00 shipping is free so that's a bonus also.

Kathleen ~ I think it's great because my credit card is an Amazon card, so I get reward certificates from Amazon for my charges and can use them toward purchases on Amazon, which then begets more reward certificates!  I can't lose! : )

Kathleen - I usually order my ink from Abacus247 on Ebay.  It's very reasonably priced and I have it within 3-4 days.  I usually order a 10 pack - 6 color and 4 black (Epson CX3800) for less than $20 including postage.  Might want to check them out as well.

And, for the record, I have never had issue with the quality of the ink.

Carol...Thanks for the suggestion.  I will certainly check that out also.

It's amazing.  Every single printer seems to have its very own cartridge.  I try to have a supply on hand.  That's a good idea except I seem to go through too many printers and now have a supply of cartridges that is worthless.  I need to find others that can use what I have.

Take care,

Kathleen
