Privacy - Pictures of your home - Should it be your biggest concern?

I have read several posts about pictures of homes on websites after they sold or just as pictures representative of homes in the area. While I see the validity of wanting your privacy, it seems there are bigger things lurking out there that should be more worrisome. It really didn't occur to me until I was driving home from the store. But when I saw it, I thought there has to be something really wrong with it. Privacy

As I was passing the front of the Home Depot, these two girls began walking out of the store past me. I stop to wait for them. Then I saw a man heading into the Home Depot. He pulled his cell phone from his pocket, opened it, pointed it at the two girls, and snapped a picture. He then proceeded towards the door where he stopped to check the quality of the photo!

I sat there in disbelief of what I saw. The girls were unaware as they were talking and laughing amongst themselves. It also didn't help that he waited for them to pass him! We worry about pictures of our homes out there. But have we really considered how many photographs of us out there. How many times have you been gardening in your front yard and bent over? What other pictures could be lurking out there that you don't know about? How many strangers could have your photo?

Is there really privacy in a public world?

Christy, That is scary!  I bet there is a lot of that going on and we don't even realize it!

You're right Christy, I don't think there is such a thing as privacy anymore. Technology is great, but is there too much - too many gadgets - available to us?

Creepy, downright creepy. I was taking some local photos for a Localism series I'm putting together. Quite a few people stopped to check out what I was doing. It's the post 9/11 age. I think it's okay to question a stranger's activity nowadays. The Home Depot, though -- that smells of stalking. Shudder up the spine.

That's why I make sure I do certain things when I take pictures of homes.

1. I now offer a disclaimer that I leave with the home owner.  The  burden is on THEM to call me and request that their photo not be used.

2. Photos of homes are free of people (particularly children)  street names and numbers.

3. License plate numbers are also taken out and I try to keep the presence of cars at a minimum.

I do  a lot to protect privacy - more than other people probably do, but that's just part of doing my job well with minimal intrusion into the lives of others.

That was terrible that that man took a photo like that, deliberatly taking it like that seems like an invasion of privacy.  But you know, I often take photos around Seattle and while I am not trying to take anyone's photo, people often are in the photos, just try getting a photo of a popular location in Seattle without any people!

Yep, going to be upset if I show up on a want a be Jenny Craig ad. Just kidding but as realtors our pictures are posted everywhere so unless the guy was taking a picture underneath their skirts ---no harm no foul. Maybe he just wanted to show his friends the good looking girls he was hanging out with at Home Depot---he wishes. Its a scary world out there and you never know what people are up to but a picture out there of me and a friend laughing doesn't bother me.

When I first started blogging it shocked me that people would pull out the camera and take photos at lunch or coffee after they asked to meet me.  Then I'd see it plastered all over the internet.  Aside from convincing me that I really needed to lose some weight, I just had to get used to it.  Camera phones are everywhere and posting your photo on their blog just happens.  I don't think that is going to change.  On the positive side, I'm down 14 lbs and still going...so maybe the change is somewhat for the good :)

Roberta: I bet there is. It's scary to think about all the possibilities.

Jim: I agree. We have so much technology that it's hard to become "invisible".

Andrew: I thought it was creepy too. And to take a picture of the backsides! It doesn't seem right.

Ruthmarie: Wow, you definitely do go that extra mile. I commend you. I never thought of leaving a disclaimer!

Deborah: I think when you are taking pictures of buildings and other sites and someone gets in the way, it's ok. You weren't deliberately taking their photo. But if someone is lying on the beach with their eyes closed, is that fair game?

Candice: I doubt his friends would see how good looking their faces were. He took the picture after they passed him. So the shot was of their backsides!

Ardell: LOL. I know what you mean. I hate seeing my picture anywhere. May be it would be a great motivation to stay in shape. But hey, round is a shape, right? LOL

That is really scary and I understand your point. We are in the public eye and being photographed and video taped more than we know....

Christy - It really bothers me that people take photos and video of unsuspecting people and place it on the internet.  I was taking pictures of a new park and there were some children playing under the supervision of their grandparents, I asked their permission before I took a picture of them playing in a splash park...  they were fine with it but I believe it would have been wrong to do without their permission.
