Religious People are Less Intelligent

I had to chuckle when I read the above headline in an Internet article the other day. The “intellectuals” are at it again…telling those of us with faith that we just aren’t as smart as they are, and if we just a little brighter we would “know” that God is right there with the Easter Bunny, Santa, and Bigfoot in terms of believability.

I thought this story was a terrific counter point to my blog from yesterday regarding the “mysterious priest” who helped a teenage girl involved in a terrible traffic accident in Missouri. In that blog, In yesterday’s blog, I opened up with a comment someone posted regarding the girl’s story. The comment was,For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible.”

According to a study conducted by Miron Zuckerman, of the University of Rochester, 53 out of 63 studies show that there is “a reliable negative relation between intelligence and religiosity” According to the study, “Even in extreme old age, intelligent people are less likely to believe, the researchers found and the reasons why people with high IQs shun religion may not be as simple as previously thought. Previous studies have tended to assume that intelligent people simply ‘know better,’ the researchers write. But, the reasons may be more complex.”

The study further added that,” intelligent people are more likely to be married and more likely to be successful in life and this may mean they need religion less.”

Part of Zuckerman’s research came from a 1916 study which found that 58% of randomly selected scientists in the United States expressed a disbelief in, or a doubt regarding God’s existence. In the most eminent scientists, that number of non-believers rose to nearly 70%. There you have it…if God’s existence cannot be proven by scientists from 1916, then He simply does not exist!

In Zuckerman’s study it was found that, “Intelligent people may simply be able to provide themselves with the psychological benefits offered by religion - such as self-regulation and self-enhancement, because they are more likely to be successful, and have stable lives.”

One researcher further explained, “People possessing the functions that religion provides are likely to adopt atheism, people lacking these very functions (e.g., the poor, the helpless) are likely to adopt theism.”

Seriously, is this not the most arrogant load of crap you have ever heard? I am reminded of the following quote from Arthur Schopenhauer, “Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.”

I can offer no proof that God exists other than my life experiences. During those times in my life when I was far away from God in my thoughts and in my actions, I felt estranged from “something”. To me, that “something” is God. If others think that I need God as a crutch in order to endure this life…I am content with that. The fact of the matter is that I love having God as my crutch. I can think of no better place than at His side.

Conversely, those times in my life when I felt immersed in my faith in God, I felt at peace. If scientists say that is delusional thinking…am all right with that too! If my faith brings me peace, who is to say that is wrong? If having faith means I am less intelligent than those without faith, we will all just have to wait and see…won’t we? In the end, one of us will be right and one of us will be wrong…and that leads to my final quote.

“I would rather live my life as if there is a god and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is.” Albert Camus

Good evening Tom. This is an interesting if far fetched example of zealots: who are both religios or not, good or not or thoughtful or not.

I can agree with you last comment, the bible is a history book and as other history books are being rewritten to the point that 31% of Americans do not know that fought a war to win independence folks will try to erase the history of the bible.

Sheila,

You point is so well taken, One's faith, or non-faith is something that should be respected as an individual's right to believe, or not to believe. I am just as uncomfortable around someone spewing religious hatred, as if they have been granted dominion over the rest of us by God; as I am with the intellectual telling me that I am stupid for believing in God.

Charles,

As parents, we have the responsibility of showing our children our faith through our actions. It is just as important as feeding and providing a roof over their heads. Note, I said showing. Going to church on Sunday, and then living your life in a way that doesn't support what should be your faith, is probably more damaging than not going to church at all. Living your life humbly and honoring God, will keep what is written on the pages of the Bible alive in the hearts of the faithful.

Michael,

You raise an interesting point, that is why I love the last quote so much! Better to be careful, than to be sorry!

I'm always interested in reading comments on the subject of intelligence vs. faith. In the past I taught adult education at a church. I did a series on creation vs. evolution. I did not use the bible at all in that course but rather presented the scientific arguments for both physics and biology. I handled the physics portion and I had a research biologist handle the subject of biological evolution. First to her part. I'm glad I asked her to step in because she brought up points I would never have known to even question. The idea that lightening struck a mud puddle (yes I'm over simplifying) and life resulted requires HUGE faith. She talked about protein bonding and went into detail that was way over my head. Bottom line, the idea that scientists have come close to duplicating the process in the lab is an absolute lie. The statistical probability that such a thing happened is virtually nonexistent. The only proof that science has to explain biological evolution is that we're here.

Now to the physics portion. I've had many debates with those who do not believe in God or creation and the discussion never gets past the origin of matter. Certainly classical physics cannot even begin to come up with a solid explanation of how it all got started. Enter quantum mechanics. This also can't explain the origin of matter but it's so complex that no one other than a quantum physicist can understand. Based on the Heisenberg uncertainty principle we can't gather physical evidence at a subatomic level so we have to use "thought experiments". Bottom line here, in order to believe the universe just happened you have to have faith. Oops, did I say that?

Therefore by the definition of the study mentioned in your post, those who don't believe in God must have a very low IQ.

Larry,

This is why I love blogging! You put something out there, and then wait to see what sort of feedback you receive. Your comments, have certainly added tremendous value to the topic of this particular blog.

You pointed out the serious flaw with this whole scientific approach to faith...its like, what came first the chicken, or the egg? You are pointing out, what's the difference..."something" had to have created either the chicken or the egg in the first place. To those with faith, that "something" is God.

Again, thanks so much for sharing!

Thomas, I must be dumb as a rock because my whole life here on earth is hinged to existance of God and my serving Him.

Mike,

We will just have to wait and see who was dumb as a box of rocks, won't we? There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth, but I don't think it will be coming from you!
