US Coast Guard Headquarters - Washington DC

Washington DC is the epi-center of the Federal Government and the many Agencies that are a part of US Government.  The Pentagon is most notably the home of the Joint Chiefs and the US Military.  However; the United States Coast Guard, under the command of Commandant Thad Allen - has it's own Headquarters - just a couple of miles away - inside the District of Columbia.

The US Coast Guard is under the control of the Department of Homeland Security and it's Headquarters building is not a part of the Pentagon complex; the Coast Guard Headquarters is located in the South West section of the District Of Columbia.  An area of DC that has gone through a couple of Urban Renewal projects; is again seeing change as the new Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium is being built just blocks away.

The Coast Guard Headquarters employs approximately 2200 people - Both military and civilian personnel.  The surrounding neighborhood consists of some different housing options; mostly condominium and co-operative buildings; such as a Riverpark Mutual Homes and Tiber Island Cooperative.  While these are great homes for those who enjoy the condo lifestyle - many choose to live in larger homes where they have yards and garages.

Nearby Virginia and Maryland offer both of these options.  Both of these states are within a short 5 mile commute from SW Washington DC and the Coast Guard Headquarters.  For those who do not care for driving through DC's traffic (3rd worse in the Nation); the Metro- DC's subway system - runs into L'Enfant Plaza from the Virginia and Maryland suburbs.  The US Coast Guard Headquarters runs shuttle buses from L'Enfant Plaza to the Headquarters building.  Even better - the Federal Government provides, as a benefit, for most of it's employees, Metro fare cards.  The idea is to help cut down traffic and relive parking constraints.

The Greater Washington Metro area; offers housing to fit any lifestyle.  Whether it be a condo in the heart of the city; close to work and nightlife; or a single family home in the quieter suburbs of Virginia or Maryland - we have it all.

The Washington DC area is serviced by 3 airports.  Washington-Dulles Airport (IAD), located in Northern Virginia, (about 25 miles from the Coast Guard HQ), links the DC metro area with 127 destinations (40 international).   Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI), in Maryland; has 62 non-stop Domestic and 8 International Non-stop destinations.  The smaller, yet very convenient Reagan National Airport (DCA), is located in Virginia, right across the Potomac River from the District and on the Blue and Yellow Metro lines.  Just 4 subway stops from the Districts' L'Enfant Plaza; makes this a great choice to fulfill Government, Business and the Districts Residents' travel needs with non-stop flights to 74 destinations.

Union Station; DC's Train Station, and located on the Metro's Red Line; has not only commuter train lines to the farther away suburbs - but provides frequent Amtrak service.  With Philadelphia being just 2 hours away by train and New York city only 4 hours away - it provides service to distant cities without the hassles of navigating airports.

Washington DC is truly a world class city - not just our Nation's Capitol; but a city filled with Museums, Monuments, Nightlife and culture.  More importantly - a home to fit every need or lifestyle.  It is one of the most Cosmopolitan cities in the United States.

Don't let people fool you...HQ is not all that bad.  There is plenty to do in and around DC, and if you don't have duty, working 8-4 5 days a week is pretty good deal.  Whether you like outdoors stuff or cultural stuff, the metro area has something to offer you.
