Berwick, Maine - Incorporated Ninth Town in Maine

York County

Berwick Maine was first known as Newichawannock, an Abenaki Indian name. There is evidence of settlement here as early as 1624 and was finally settled in 1631. The town was incorporated on June 9, 1713 by the Massachusetts General Court. Berwick is the 9th oldest town in Maine. Named after a town called Berwick-on-Tweed in Dorsetshire, England. Berwick suffered many Indian raids before becoming established.

Berwick is located just over the New Hampshire border from Somersworth New Hampshire. North Berwick and South Berwick were originally part of the town. South Berwick became was set off in 1814 and North Berwick in 1831. The 2000 Census shows 6,353 residents living on 42 square miles. Berwick is the home of Maine's first school house built in 1719.

Lumbering was the major industry to begin with, when I was child Berwick was home to a thriving shoe manufacturing industry. Today Berwick is home to Prime Tanning, leather suppliers to the finest footwear and upholstry manufacturers in the world. Prime Tanning is part of the largest leather manufacturers in the United States.

Beaver Dam Campground on Rte 9 is situated on a 20 acre spring fed pond. This pet friendly facility offers a wide range of activities. You can rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboats; enjoy the Game room, Ball Field and Movie Room; swim in the pool or pond and go Bass fishing with no license required.
