Top 5 Safety Tips as School Starts
Sarasota County schools start this week; Sheriff Tom Knight is advising drivers and school children to follow the top 5 safety tips to prevent unnecessary accident and injury.
1. Any adults who drive children to school are encouraged to leave home early to avoid heavy traffic.
2. Drivers of all ages should watch for children in school zones and bus stop areas.
3. All vehicles must stop when the school bus lights are flashing and the sign is out. This is true even if the bus is on the opposite side of the road, unless a median more than 4 feet wide divides the road.
4. Teach children to catch the eye of drivers when walking in front of a school bus.
5. Always drive slowly in school zones and pay close attention to crossing guards.
The fine is expensive, it is better to follow the top 5 safety tips than be sorry.
Current fines start at $156 for driving 1 to 9 miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone, up to $456 for 20 to 29 miles per hour over, and a mandatory court appearance for 30 miles per hour or more over the speed limit.
The greater risk however is not to a motorist’s wallet or pocket book but to the life and safety of a precious child, so be a good driver and follow the top 5 safety tips. Deputies are asking all drivers to slow down and pay closer attention when driving before and after school in school zones and bus stop areas in your neighborhood.
Love life, care for yourselves as well as the children and drive safe!
