Have you Hugged Your Boss Today, this Friday is National Hug Your Boss Day.

hug your boss day

As an Employee;

I am a big hugger, but when I was an employee nearly a quarter of a century ago, I don't remember ever hugging my boss.

But since that time my Boss is someone that I refer to as a Client, and yes I have hugged a few of these, not often but every once in a while you do run into a hugger.

It's always a surprise, but it does feel nice to have a client who cares or appreciates you enough to step out of their comfort zone and give you a hug.

As a Boss;

Over the past 30 years I have had more employees than I could begin to count, and very few approached me for a hug and I would never approach them for something that could be misconstrued as something more illicit.

I have had a few folks who gave my wife a hug, generally when they are saying tearful goodbyes on their way to their next job opportunity, but for some reason all Bob gets is a handshake.

Is is because I am a big intimidating guy, I don't know, my son Nick is pretty big and more intimidating than I am, and he seems to get plenty of hugs.

I do have one employee who has been one of our top cruisers starting with a goshawk survey in the Minnesota Boundary Waters when he was in junior high school, and still is our top cruiser now that he has his BS in Forestry, and this employee is always happy to look for a hug.

This employee is my son Nick and whenever he leaves for the woods, he always stops to give his dad a hug, even with the other foresters looking at him a little strangely.

I enjoyed the post Bob, I believe in hugs when appropriate and welcomed. Here in California, there is a different atmosphere it seems. Lawsuits and harassment are commonplace. So when in doubt, hug your spouse.  :)

Yes Tom, lawsuits and harassment are commonplace everywhere, it is something to be careful with, especially if you are the boss.

I like your rhyme, when in doubt...

Great post Bob. Every opportunity to give someone a hug I always will. It doesn't matter if it clients, employees and family for sure. It doesn't matter to me if it is male or female.

Bob, thank you for the post! There are so many "days" I had no idea existed. I wonder what the history of hug you day is and why August 23rd?

This was a very good post Bob.  I have hugged co-workers or boss whenever attending an event at their home such as a holiday or Super Bowl party. If something sad happens, like a pet dies, I will give a hug or welcome a hug. Before I moved to Vermont, my broker had a boat that fit maybe ten people. We would go boating off the Jersey shore occasional afternoons during the summer.  When leaving the boat, I would always give him a hug goodbye. I am sure glad that we had all those hugs because a few years ago he found out that he had cancer and passed ten days later.
