A WELL DRESSED PYTHON IS STILL A SNAKE

By

There are people in every business who do not know what they are talking about yet continue to try to influence one party or another. In Real Estate, fair & honest dealing and fiduciary helps to check mate this but not stop it completely. So what happens is occasionally there will be someone somewhere who talks gibberish fluently and that just isn't going to cut it...ever

BEING INFORMED

Lets take local Real Estate agents. As a general rule, they know their own markets. They can talk shop about the neighborhood, events, past present and future and if they don't know something, they will find out. There is a comfort level that is introduced when buying from someone who knows what they are speaking of as demonstrated by the time they took to find out on the subject matter

ANSWER THE QUESTION

Then there are those that can imitate the above and when questioned rely on gibberish, aggressive sales or changing of the subject to answer relevant questions. If you stop and listen to someones response to a bona fide question and receive nonsense or evasiveness in response, you will see this for yourself. These people answer you to get rid of the question and not to answer the question

MAKING UP ANSWERS?

Why don't people say they don't know or I will go find out and invest in some credibility or getting to know you dynamics? Because they are not in it for you to win it but for them to win it and that just wont do. I asked a man the other day a simple relevant question which bothered him because he didn't have the answer so he made one up. MY Response? Oh, so you really don't know...do you...He acquiesced. However he should have said that

THE PRODUCT AND THE PERSON SHOULD SELL ITSELF

You find these well dressed PYTHONS just about everywhere and in different businesses. The car industry is famous for it and is the shoe industry as well.... although with shoes, if done incorrectly, sore feet and a return to the store settles that score. With cars, your stuck big time. If done in Real Estate and they get away with it...I'LL SEE YOU COURT is the typical follow up

I USED TO ASK WAY BEFORE IT WAS A LAW

Now a days they list the ingredients of food sold wherever you go along with nutritional information too. But there was a time where people could not answer that question but assured you how delicious the food was. It's so good and I eat it myself too. I know its delicious etc. I am not asking you that. I am asking calorie count, what type of fat or oil and ingredients. Gibberish at work..

YOU SEE IT IN THE RAIN TOO

On ActiveRain, you can tell the ones who really know theIR business by the way they post about the subject matter or when they respond to a subject. It becomes obivous by reason of being self-evident as to whether that person knows or does not know. By the same token, shallow, safe or distant answers give you away all the time too

POPEYE THE SAILOR MAIN...well liked

I am what I am and that's all that I am.....honesty at work...because he said the obvious and that is a good answer to give

Richie, I was told to never say, "I don't know" when I got into the industry. To me, if you do not know, admit it, then take the best course to find the answer.

Wanda...yes to your comment...I called my cable company because they raised rates AGAIN and wanted to reduce to the lowest possible services...All I got was a pitch to not do so until I had to intervene and direct the conversation to the reason why I CALLED....The dishonesty only confirmed my original thought...reduce these services and if I can..eliminate them some day soon...Serve me NOT YOU is the point

Richie, Oh my goodness ... yes, the gibberish is everywhere. They need not be well dressed either. You are most certainly correct and most observant to call out the fact that we have it here in the Rain as well.  We have many a pretenders here. If we read, observe and listen to what they say, it does not take long to connect the dots and realize while many may have bought into their gibberish, we do not. Some of them I have followed ... then I unfollow before I get bitten.

Richie, your post reminds me of when I was shopping for a new car in year 2010.  I thought the days of the "Snake Oil Salesman" was over... until I tried to buy a car.

One Salesman tried to sell me everything else on the Lot, except the car that I wanted.  He gave me all sorts of reasons to buy a different car.

Another Salesman took me to his office, he pulled out a couple of glasses and offered me a drink.  I said, "No, thanks - I read Joe Girard's book - you will pour me Scotch; you will fill your glass with colored water".  He looked embarrassed, laughed nervously, and put the glasses back.

Another Salesman pulled out a multi-page "Contract" and literally held it down with his hand, and gave me a pen and said, "Just sign here and the car is yours!".  Yeah, sure.

Sorry for the long rant, but your post reminded me of "Well Dressed Pythons".

Hi Richie, another great post. Anyone can make up an answer to a question they don't know but a true professional can say "I don't know, but will find out" and with the speed of lightning get the answer and you service the client and also probably learn something too. You can't lie your way through it or the customer will find out you are a "well dressed snake" as you say.

The people who do this make us look like the stereo type of a used car salesman. I hate that. I am a man of my word and I mean what I say and treat others as I want to be treated.

Richie, for quite a while I was fearful of writing here, questioning myself and my knowledge. I studied, learned more and more, did my own stats to be sure, read up on so many things. I had always answered client questions I didn't know the answer to with "let me check on that for you, I'm not sure of that". But to write things as an expert scared me for some reason.

The solution was easier than I thought. Give myself credit where credit is due, write what I am an expert in, don't write about what I am not an expert in.

For instance, you won't see me writing in detail about mortgage products, except general information about programs I am aware of with a link to where they can get more information. I am not the expert, but I know a few good experts in that field!

You also won't see me writing about construction issues. I leave that to the experts!

Great post! As always!

Andrea...you are getting to know yourself and to become comfortable in the process which boosts confidence...Well done little lady. I share many things some I have mastered, some grasped, some by awareness and some opinions...But what I am most proud of is WHAT I DO NOT KNOW

The problem with bloggers are: some know what they are talking about ~ yet, some don't! I had a very angry client today who is.....looking for answers online and believes that that is the way it should be. He sent the lender and the escrow( cc me) a very angry email telling they don't know what they are doing. Yep. He found online 'the right answers' and sent us the links to some blogs, including 'the smart mama . com' and one of a local 'I know it all' realtor. It does not matter that we explained him for hours what is his situation is and it is not the same...nope. He said that he knows better what we should do. I almost called that realtor to tell what I'm thinking about his blog. Ayayay....
