Running has become a more popular group activity over the past few years. With more and more walking/running-friendly communities in the Lake Norman area, runners are finding new routes.
Many neighborhoods offer connecting sidewalks, providing a safe area for exercise. The Preserve at Robbins Park in Cornelius is very close to the McDowell Greenway – which connects Birkdale Village, Robbins Park, Stratford Forest and the Alexander Chase. There are other walking/running-friendly communities within the Lake Norman area – Vermillion, Wynfield, River Run, McConnell, Morrison Plantation.
There are also many running groups and forums focusing on running around Lake Norman:
D.A.R.T. – Davidson Area Running Team. This running group meets multiple times a week for different distances. All paces welcome!
Fleet Feet Sports – Fleet Feet is a local running store in Birkdale Village. Different training groups are offered for folks interested in a variety of distances.
Run with Theoden – Theoden Janes writes for the Charlotte Observer and posts about the local running scene on Facebook. If you have questions about running, form, apparel, races – he is happy to post it and you will get feedback from local runners. He also hosts a weekly run with Charlotte folks, all paces welcome.
Whether you are just starting out with an exercise schedule or are an active walker/jogger/runner, be sure to check out the exercise-friendly communities and greenways in our area!
