Declutter your life in 15 minutes, for those who dont have 90 hours to spare.

I was reading earlier tonight in preparation for my continuing series on August Declutter month as part of the AR August cloudburst challenge.

I came across a blog suggesting developing a 10 minute a day habit of doing something simple to eat away at your piles of clutter.

Great ideas, especially since if you are like me, those 10 minutes will morph into a longer stretch of cleaning power.

This blogger's premise is that this habit will add up to an amazing 60 hours per year, and a very organized office and life.

Then a while later I came across a video that suggested an even better idea, let’s go for 15 minutes  per day, it’s only an extra 5 minutes, and it will gain us a whopping 90 HOURS per year, and of course a very organized life.

So Join me starting today and see if we can develop this good habit.

  A few starter ideas...

  1.     Scan that pile of business cards into outlook.
  2.     Type up or throw out that pile of notes on the corner of my desk
  3.     Enter all those to-do’s into my To-do list, they will only get forgotten in that pile.
  4.     Go through that desk drawer that has been needing a good cleanout since you first started in business.
  5.     File that pile of papers.
  6.     Shred that other pile of papers.
  7.     Sort through one of the many email folders on your computer.
  8.     Organize a few of the gazillion pictures on your HD, camera, SD card, phone, etc.
  9.     Put those picture files in the proper client file on your computer.
  10.     Put that pile of books away that have been stacking up by your reading chair.
  11.     Organize your notes from the last workshop that you went to.
  12.     Review an unfinished project and decide how to finish it or whether to end it and file it somewhere.
  13.     Organize a shelf of your library.
  14. Clean all of those dusty papers out of your sorting racks, sorting racks are not filing cabinets you know.
  15.     Sit down at your desk and look around more little projects will pop out.
  16.     Clean up your vehicle.
  17.     Put away those tools that someone dropped off on your desk.
  18.     Find a pile of old magazines to review, file, or dispose of.
  19.     Scan that newspaper article and toss the paper copy.
  20.     Organize the office kitchen.

Bob, those are all great ideas. I did well to spend 5 minutes cleaning up some junk by my side of the bed tonight. Suggested.

Bob - Maybe 15 minutes a day would at least keep my clutter from growing. I seem to be an expert at making a mess. I always have these "piles" scattered around my office - and had to laugh one day when my horoscope in the newspaper said it was the day to deal with them. (How'd they know?)

Once or twice a year I go into this mode. At the end of the day yesterday, my desk was completely clean, I am always amazed how good it feels, let alone looks.

I don't know.  Seems to me that the scanning required to organized some things is going to occupy more than 15 minutes.

Bob- did you peek at my desk?  I do think that if we can get in the habit of spending just 15 minutes a day to declutter and organize our desks, we'd end up with a lot of free time... or at least "uncluttered" time.

Bob~ This is the one part of the monthly cloudburt challenge that is really challenging me. I like the idea of doing a little bit at a time though. So here's what I'm going to do right now...clean all the glasses, cups and cans off of my desk (that have been collecting for a few days!

Step 2~ Clear away the pile on top of the printer. It's small put it's a start!

Bob, thanks for sharing this video. Not only does it declutter but you don't have to spend a lot of time doing it. That's one of the factors for me: "how long will this take?" The quicker it is, the easier it will be to do in the future and create a habit out of it.

Whoa!  Living with a clutter-free nut, this should give her a lot more to chew on.  Nothing will be safe in my home.  (I am an antiques dealer, primarily, so there is far more "clutter" than she cares for.)  Thanks, Bob.

Now I am on the hook again.  But these are great suggestions.
