What are USTs and why do we regulate them? - About 650,000 underground storage tank systems (USTs) nationwide store petroleum or hazardous substances that can harm the environment and human health if the USTs release their stored contents. The Office of Underground Storage Tanks (OUST) was created in 1985 to carry out a Congressional mandate to develop and implement a regulatory program for underground storage tank (UST) systems.
