I just received an exciting e-mail from the IRS:

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $480.23. (Goody! Er, does this mean you've been monitoring all my fiscal activity?)

Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 3-6 days in order to process it. A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. (I'll bet it can.)

For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline. (What deadline? You didn't mention any deadline!)

To access the form for your tax refund, please click here (URL removed; but it pointed to a site in Japan, where I guess the IRS has its headquarters now.)

Note: For security reasons, we will record your ip-address, the date and time. Deliberate wrong inputs are criminally pursued and indicated. (I'm not sure how I'm supposed to change my IP address, date, or time, but I sure am scared to try now.)

4 Comments on Thank you, IRS! An unexpected tax refund--NOT

I think another division of the IRS helps those nice people overseas get their unclaimed millions out of the country with your help.  But they pay a VERY GENEROUS fee for just providing them with your bank account numbers and a nominal processing fee.

The really scary part is that there must be enough people who participate in this crap that it's profitible for the scammers.

That's funny.  You know the one with the foreign model that chats you up and then bilks you out of hundreds of dollars so you can rescue her and bring her to the US?  I know a guy that fell for it.

He actually thought that $350 would get her here from Africa!

Don't these people ever sleep. They are always thinking of ways to get ya.

Hi, Eric, Amanda, and Carl--thanks for your comments!

When I have the time, I actually enjoy reading the messages I get from the IRS, various banks at which I do not remember opening an account, and all those folks from Nigeria and the UK.

Cheers,

Robni
