Brentwood, New Hampshire Town Seal, Brentwood, NH Local History and Tourism

Brentwood NH was originally a parish of Exeter NH. In 1742 they petitioned Governor Benning Wentworth to be able to have their own meetinghouse and minister paid for by public funds. Before the Europeans settled here this was home to Pennacook Abenaki tribes who farmed, hunted and fished the area. The name originally came from a suburb in London named Brentwood or "Burnt wood" for the burning of 40 acres in 1177 of King Henry II's land to create a clearing for cultivation.

Brentwood is the Rockingham county seat and is home to Rockingham County Courthouse, Rockingham County Registry of Deeds, Rockingham County Nursing Home and Rockingham County Jail. Brentwood encompasses 17 square miles and the Exeter River and Lamprey River run through it. Mills along the rivers produced lumber although the community shifted to agriculture as it grew. Nowadays it is a predominately residential community of 3,780 according to the 2006 Census with a rural feel.

Brentwood is part of Exeter Regional SAU 16. Grades K-5 attend Swasey School. The Lighthouse Christian Academy also calls Brentwood home along with the Seacoast Learning Collaborative for special needs students.

On North Road you will find the Rockingham County Botanical Garden. A 10 acre garden open to the public on Thursday mornings from April 1 to October 15. The garden began in 1996 as an idea of the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners.
