Washington: The Indispensable ManDemocracy is more fragile than we often suppose. Look at the troubles in Iraq, Afghanistan and Russia. And it wasn't long after the French Revolution that Napolean reigned unchecked. What about in our own country?

Today is President's Day. Just about the only way we celebrate this holiday is by kicking off of work. But it's also an election year, and there are many challenges in our country and around the world to democracy and freedom. May I suggest some reading?

Washington: The Indispensable Man

Following the Revolutionary War, what had happened in France could very well have happened in the newborn United States of America. Historian James Thomas Flexner, in one volume, cuts through the myths to give you a full portrait of George Washington that is exciting, suspenseful, and fascinating.

Unfortunately, my education never gave me an honest assessment of George Washington. Reading this book, I met a man who, by the sheer force of his character and humility, resisted the urge to grasp at power during a time when many would retreat into the safety of monarchy or dictatorship.

Now more than ever, with the threats from within and without that face our good country, this book should be read and discussed. It made me realize how unique the United States of America is...and grateful to be her citizen.

Interesting Joey, I will have to check it out.  I actually read today that even though it's election time, book sales for political books are kind of down...this sounds like a very solid read.

Jason: I expect a full report, single spaced, on my desk next Monday. :) Of the people that subscribe to my blog, you are one that I was hoping would come across this. No matter one's political presuppositions, this is just and 'indispensable' book. Thanks.

Wonderful, I love book reports.  Time to get out the old secret weapon, the cliff notes:-)

Joey,  Thanks for the insight.  Never really thought of it in those terms.  It's a shame that with all the years that we are schooled that we are not taught more about these individuals, except for the generic stuff.

Marc: It's amazing just how much we aren't taught. With books like this around, why do we even use textbooks?

Joey, I wish my book club had not dissolved; that would have been a wonderful book to read for it.  I have a pile of books still to read from Christmas I'm going to bookmark for later reference.

We live in a unique nation, Joe.... one that NEEDS prayer to
put the right person in office... one day there will be NO
elections...

the King will sit on His Throne....

and the books will be opened...

The series on the revolution on the History Channel last year had some remarkable stuff about Washington. Was particularly interesting. Can you imagine him. Jefferson, Franklin and Adams all in the same time? We had talent like that again for WWII, and it is so sorely missed now.

Have a president goof on the drawing board I hoped to get to today, but spent 12 hours figuring how to make pricing slides work for the seminar. Think I got it. And am chicken fried.

cheers

Marchel: If I didn't already have a stack of books on my 'to read' list, I would offer to be in a book club with you. Still...it's a good one. Thanks for coming by.

Alexander: So true, so true. Do you ever read N.T. Wright? His books are a great read and challenge a lot of my presuppositions about faith and America. I would recommend "The Challenge of Jesus" to start. Curious how you would feel about that one.

Gary (Richard): I don't know that we had talent like Jefferson alone at any time. We've been studying him as a family and what President Kennedy said to the Nobel winners in the White House about Jefferson still rings true...do you know that one? I'm teaching seminar for other mortgage loan officers tomorrow, so I understand what you mean about KFC-brain. Good luck!
