TROPIC LIGHTNING REAL ESTATE AGENTS OF HAWAII COMPETE IN 8.15 MILE GREAT ALOHA RUN

Each year, Honolulu Hawaii hosts the Great Aloha Run; a 8.15 mile race from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium.

This year, there were 13,742 entrants in all different categories from expert runners, to young children to racers in wheelchairs. Some of the major participants are our military comrades from Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Marine Corps Base Kaneohe, Pearl Harbor, Hickam Air Force Base, Tripler Army Medical Center, Camp H.M. Smith and several others across the island. As a retired Military family ourselves, we are right at home in the company of all of our fine Soldiers, Sailors, Arimen and Marines.

Tonya and I decided to represent Tropic Lightning Real Estate this year during the race. We arrived at Aloha Stadium where we boarded a shuttle bus that would take us to the starting line. After sitting around and stretching for 1.5 hours while waiting for the race to start, we began to run at approximately 7:15. The Mayor of Honolulu, Muffi Hanneman, was at the starting line and waved to everyone as they set out on the 8.15 mile journey.

Tonya and I finished at 1 hour 51 minutes which equates to a 13:40 per mile pace. That put us in finishing as number 6,921 and 6,925 out of 13,742 total competitors. The weather was perfect for the duration of the race and crossing the line inside Aloha Stadium is a great accomplishment. We look forward to competing again next year and representing Tropic Lightning Real Estate.

David.. tisk, tisk... 13:40 per mile? lol Seriously, first off, I would never make it now because I am so out of shape. I know when I was in the Army, at least in basic training, I think I was the 2 miles under 8 minutes? But gee, I guess that was 22 years ago? Damn, that just made me feel much older.

Seriously though, this is great. Was it for any kind of charity?

Awwww......come on man! Tonya didn't spend 22 years in the Army doing PT with me so I had to stay with her. I can still hold about an 8:00 mile pace myself but for 8.15 miles I probably would have been more around a 10 minute mile pace. This is a list of the charitable organizations that benefit from the run. The fact that it supports Morale Welfare and Recreation for our Military Troops and the Hawaii High School Athletic Assocation are the two charities that I am happy to see the money going to.

Benefiting Organizations

Since 1985, the Carole Kai Charities, Inc. has given over $7.8 million to over 100 non-profit organizations in our community. Major charities are:

National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Funds from the Great Aloha Run support the MS Society's educational programs aimed to help individuals and families cope with the physical and emotional effects of MS.

MWR
MWR serves the needs and interests of each service and family member and retiree with affordable programs and services designed to enhance the quality of their lives.

NIE
The Newspaper in Education program promotes literacy and educational achievement by distributing classroom newspapers to over 200 public and private schools in Hawaii.

UCP
UCP's Child Development Center is an early intervention program which provides services to children 0-3 years who have severe, multiple developmental delays.

Hawaii High School Athletic Association
HHSSA serves 78 public and private high schools by promoting the educational benefits of interscholastic athletics by increasing participation in a variety of sports.

Hawaii Service on Deafness
HSOD provides continuous services to the deaf & hard hearing community in Hawaii since 1974

Great Aloha Run also supports the Coalition for Dads, Girl Scout Council, Hawaii Services on Deafness, Leeward Special Olympics, the YMCA and more!

1SG, Great Job. I've just begun attempting to get back into some semblance of shape and know the effort it takes. Once there again I hope to never stop maintaining. My hat's off to you and your wife, not only for the charitable aspect but the physical too.
