I had something really nice happen to me today. About a year ago, I had switched real estate firms, but still kept in touch with many of the wonderful people I met at the other company.

One agent I befriended was really struggling to get her career going. She's a Woman of Faith and desperately desired to follow her dreams of doing real estate full time.

This evening, she and I spoke after many months of not talking because of schedules, etc., and she said:

"I would like to thank you for encouraging me! Remember when you said that when you first got started, sometimes you didn't know where your next client was coming from but you knew God was going to send them? Well...I held on to those words through some tough times, and they really pulled me through."

Believe me, this woman has been through some trials!

I guess that moral of this story is we never know how our words will affect someone. So, whenever possible, we should always try to encourage each other.

31 Comments on Do You Encourage Other Agents - Even If They Aren't with Your Firm?

Yes, I do.

I've met other agents at various events, and have ending up talking about the business.  It's not always about competing for the business, but rather co operating with each other in the business.

Unfortunately for me though, I've had agents from other firms try to discourage me.

Sylvia ~ I feel your pain. But hopefully, we can set a good example for those agents who are discouraging. Who knows, maybe one day they'll change their ways!

Darleen,

I think we should try to encourage everyone...Realtor or not. I especially take a lot of joy from encouraging other Realtors because I know how hard it is to be successful in today's market. Thanks for being an encouragement for others!!

Andrew ~ Hi. Yes, most definitely, we should encourage everyone. This is a tough business, and at some point, we all need encouragement. Thanks for stopping by...

I whole-heartily agree. I believe it doesn't hurt to encourage anyone. Especially those who are in need to be uplifted, whether they are with your firm or not. To encourage others is not exactly giving away trade secrets.

Alexander ~ Thanks for stopping by! I recently joined this group, and really love what I'm reading so far. Also, thanks for the Feature in the group.

Mary ~ Thanks so much for the compliment. We all have rough days - and we should try to lift each other up, whether they are within our firm or not. I feel that anyone who is trying to make a go of real estate, especially during this time, should be applauded and uplifted!

Derrick ~ Exactly. What we put out in the world comes back to us, often 10 fold. I'm not quite sure why people are so hesitant to be kind sometimes.

Darleen - One of my best agent friends left our firm for another and I love spending time encouraging and being encouraged by her. We are with firms, but independently owned and operated. We choose how to do our own business - isn't it beautiful?

02/20/2008 02:15 PM by Lindsey Hasford (Coldwell Banker Vision)

Darleen- Thnaks for reminding us to encourage one another, it is tough to remember to do that with the market so bad right now. Have a great day.

02/20/2008 02:58 PM by Solaris Realty

Dan ~ Most definitely. I truly believe that "To whom much is given, much is required." We must encourage each other.

Lindsey ~ At the end of the day, people are people. And it really shouldn't matter which firm they are associated with - but instead about what's in their Spirit.

Pam ~ We must especially encourage each other now. Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, I love encouraging everyone I come in contact with.  It seems we do the most encouraging with people who dropped out of our lives and we ended up seeing them again.  That is the case with a few agents who left our office.  Most of them continue to contact me and I am sure it is for words of encouragment because they always end up saying, I am glad I called you.  Thanks for the post.

Since everybody here encourages people I'm in need of some encouragement. Lord knows I need some encouragement with the year that I am having so far. But I have seen the righteous forsaken. God is able to do what he said he is going to do. I am claiming by a month from now, something great is going to happne to everybody here that responds to this post. Great post Darleen.

03/05/2008 07:33 PM by Lanre Folayan "Buy a home in Washington,DC" (EXIT PREMIER REALTY)

Hi Darleen-- yes we can be encouragers to others in our profession, Christian or not, for our backdrop is one of encouragement from the very beginnings of our faith and the Acts of the apostles.  Great post to highlight the faith that's in encouragement, Darleen, and your faith pulled your friend through, and from Lanre's comment, it's pulling another through.  God bless you!

Treat everyone with respect. It will go a long way in this world. Along the way you could uplift another agent and make their day. You may be the only 1 to make their day..

I love this sentiment, Darleen. Thanks for posting it and putting it out there.

It was a pleasure to have met you at the Raleigh Active Rain meet up the other night. Your generosity of spirit comes through to everyone you meet and this blog too.

Best wishes to you.

Veronica ~ Hi. It was such a pleasure to meet you at the AR get-together earlier this week. Thank you so much for your compliments. You, Dawn, and I will have to get together for sushi soon.

03/07/2008 09:56 PM by Darleen McCullen, Broker-Raleigh, NC Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty - www.darleenmc.com)

Sonya ~ It's great that the agents are still in contact with you. It shows that you are a very caring individual and that they value your opinion. Thanks for stopping by.

Lanre ~ Hang in there! And yes, the Bible does say that "I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread." I have said a prayer for you.

Terry ~ Yes, this business is a daily faith walk for me and so many of us in real estate. The market has shifted in so many are fearful. We'll pull through this just fine.

03/07/2008 10:05 PM by Darleen McCullen, Broker-Raleigh, NC Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty - www.darleenmc.com)

That's a great story, Darleen, and I can absolutely see you being one of those warm, caring agents who don't mind sharing a bit!  Kudos to you for that.

We don't always know how our words and actions are going to impact someone else's life and I think your post is a timely reminder that we should all *think* about the impact we do have.  It can make such a difference to someone else, even when we don't realize it at the time.

03/07/2008 10:33 PM by Susan Haughton Alexandria, VA REALTOR® (Long & Foster REALTORS® Old Town Alexandria)

Susan ~ Thank you! And yes, we never know how much of a difference our words can make in someone's life. Words are so powerful. They can uplift - or tear one down. We must choose carefully.

Robert ~ Thank you! I do believe that we all have a responsibility to help each other.

Tanya ~ Yes - we were all new at some point in this business. It can be a very cold and lonely career sometimes - so we definitely need to lean on each other from time-to-time.

Darleen...great post and inspirational, too.  I think a good deed is never wasted, even if you do not see the effect or impact it has immediately.  Keep up the great work!!
