Honolulu, Hawaii: Central Business District & Waikiki

Waikiki and the Honolulu Business District no doubt will depict some wonderful history as well as growth and signs of continuing growth.  Because of our strict zoning laws, the Hawaiian islands have only so much build-able land and a big portion is preservation and conservation land. Therefore, we always see tearing down and building back up especially in the downtown and Waikiki areas.

The picture to the left was taken from Ala Moana Shopping Center and at the bottom middle of the picture you can see the Boulevard leading into the ever famous Waikiki.

And to think that Waikiki used to be swampland!

Directly to the right of that Waikiki entry is the picture to the right. This gives a drastic change in the look of the scenery of bustling Waikiki. Here lies the Waikiki Yacht Club and situated right on the edge of Ala Moana Beach Park.

Waikiki Yacht Club:  1599 Ala Moana Boulevard Honolulu, HI 96814 / Call (808) 955-4405 for more information on membership and activities.

Downtown Honolulu! Historical buildings and complexes as well as modern buildings for businesses. Another area that is constantly being worked on whether to restore or maintain these historic buildings or reconstruct newer buildings.

We categorize this downtown Honolulu neighborhood into four categories:

*Chinatown- The Lion Dance & History of Honolulu's Chinatown  Growing since the 1800's, then burned, then rebuilt.

*Waterfront - Where we had our Hawaii Active Rain Gathering......2008 First Hawaii ActiveRain Gathering a HUGE Success! and also has the Aloha Tower, Falls of Clyde, the dinner cruise ships and Foreign Trade Zone.

*Capitol District- Contains most State, Federal and Government buildings including Iolani Palace and other historical sites ActiveRain Guide to Oahu: Points of Interest (Part I)

*Central Business District - Contains most of the Hawaii businessesand skyscrapers and "Fort Street Mall". One of the older shopping malls situated between Beretania and Hotel Street and then from Hotel Street to King Street and then from King Street to Merchant Street.

Be it old or new buildings there will definitely be rich history, modern businesses and local flair to our four category Downtown Honolulu Neighborhood.

Sis - I still want the relocation packet!  After all the pictures and videos I've seen of that beautiful land, I'm destined to one day set foot there and never look back:-)

Hi Sally,

You always do such a great job showcasing your beautiful state. It's easy to see why you're at the top when it comes to Hawaii Realtors! Great work.

Sally, this side of Hawaii is very different than what I think of Hawaii as being.  I picture Hawaii much more like the past pictures that you have posted, but I guess even Hawaii has the busy streets and high rise building of all major cities.

Sally,

I thoroughly enjoy these posts you do about the history of Hawaii and it's areas.

I had no idea that Waikiki used to be swampland! Neither did I realize it is so built up now.

Wonderful pictures....almost as good as being there...well, maybe not quite.

I love the way you link to your other posts.  You write great posts and give a second life to old ones, all at the same time!  God job, Sally.

Lil Bro:  Yup...one day you'll do the same thing Gary did...I did tell you he's from PA right?

Lynda: Thanks a bunch....Hey, if it's one thing I do is give em plenty of showcasing, huh?

George: And yeah, don't get down there too much lol!  We do have to go downtown once or twice a year ...seriously.

Jo: And you'll be another who comes to visit me!!!

Margaret: I love to link back to relevant posts.....and it really does give them life...once again :)

Sally- Like how you separated the areas......and yea, I can see how some wouldn't think of Hawaii and Big Cities all in one thought.....but unfortunately, or fortunately, you do have big cities, and big city problems just like the rest of us :)

Sally, I love all these different areas that  you spoke about and didn't realize you have highrises there as well.  Hawaii certainly is diverse, not only in it's people but in these wonderful, distinct neighborhoods!

Well I see from the other comments I wasn't the only one surprised to see tall buildings...amazing the picture we carry in our minds...hammocks and coconuts ...and condo's of course! Oh and an occasional outdoor market!

We all learned something new today, I see.  I had the same misconception of Hawaii not having high rise office buildings.  Why?  I don't know - I guess because you have the best beach photos on your blog all of the time :)

Fascinating to read this, Sally, after visiting just a few weeks ago. It's easy to see how much it has changed, and continues to grow and change. I was surprised at how many high rises there were.

Sally, I have told you this before but it is still so true. I believe the State of Hawaii should place you on the payroll. WOW great post

James: No matter what...there will always be a 'city' in state....Honolulu continues to grow...once out of the downtown/Waikiki area..not toooo many skyscrapers around :)

Kathy and Carole: Funny how people think that even downtown Honolulu doesn't have buildings.....I guess they miss all those pictures.  :)

Joan: Of course there are hammocks and coconut trees all over....just downtown Honolulu is 'business'.  We do have almost a million people here :)

02/20/2008 10:44 AM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), Hawaii Real Estate & Hawaii Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Lisa: And so the reason to make it clear that though the majority of our island is not skyscrapers...we do have a business section that is :)

Jeff: Especially is Waikiki and downtown huh?  Yeah, at least you got to see some of the other side of the island as well.

Oh...and a lot of our RE related offices are right here in the business district ... for people who live on that side :)

Sallly,  Well, I miss the frilly that was for Valentines Day.   Nice things in life are transient and we can't generally go back.  Thanks again for making the moment nice with the "passing" frilly.  I enjoyed it a lot.  Jerry

Sally - Most of Florida used to be a swampland as well!!! They brought in clay and fill - and the Army Corps of Engineers drained a good chunk of the Everglades (now they are trying to reverse that damage!!!)-

03/03/2008 08:24 AM by Barbara-Jo & Bill - - Florida Realty Professional - AHWD (Charles Rutenberg Realty)

BJ: I knew Florida was swampland. For Waikiki it is just the sand that keep getting washed away.
