The vintage base ball club I play for, The Elizabeth Athletic Club, is getting ready to start it's Spring Season. Based out of Elizabeth, NJ, we get the opportunity to play other Vintage Clubs up and down the East Coast from Elkton MD up to Providence, RI. Our players range in age from 18-50 and play the game as it was in the 1860's through the 1890's: replica balls, bats, gloves(or no glove).
What is Vintage Base Ball? Check out www.vbba.org and our team at www.eaclub.org . We are always looking for new players who enjoy a sense of history and enjoy base ball. If interested shoot me an e-mail.
Check out the links, www.vbba.org has a list of many clubs, although not all are clubs are members. All vintage teams are replicas of actual teams from that era, like The Providence Grays, for example.
Michael - That is pretty much the coolest thing that I have ever seen. Softball is fun, but that looks unreal. Do you leave your glove on the field when you head into the dugout like they did in Eight Men Out? I will have to see if I can bring my son to a game.
We use our own gloves in 1891 rules, however, in earlier years there were no gloves at all except for the catcher, pitcher(sometimes), and first base(sometimes). In 1873, Base Ball was still an underhand(below the waist) pitched game, with no glove.
The rules evolved into the modern game quite slowly from 1864-1898, which is pretty much modern. I personally think the "quick pitch" should be brought back-no more stepping out of the box after each pitch.
My team, which is based out of Elizabeth, NJ, is actively recruiting players for our upcoming spring season. Anyone interested can e-mail me or call me for details!
Mike - that is too cool. Wish I had the time. I would however like to take in a game. Will you be publishing a schedule for the season or is it on a week to week basis?
Michael, I read an article on vintage Baseball last fall, it looks like a blast, the home games are just too far away!
