The portability portions of Ammendment 1 that was just passed is retroactive to January 1st of 2007 . This means if you had a homestead exemption on your previous home last year (2007) and purchased a new home in 2007, you now may qualify for portability which can mean a substantial tax break. If your property is currently homesteaded, you do not need to file for the double homestead exemption.
