Florida approves the teaching of "evolution" in schools

It's been going on for weeks and it finally came to a vote today and now forida teachers will be adding the teaching of evolution to students. They are not allowed to teach other theories such as intelligent design. But clearly evolution is a real theory as this picture of my buddy Hugh shows! (a link from http://www.stuff.co.nz/ ).

The vote was 4-3 in favor when the State Board of Education approved new science standards for Florida's public schools that, for the first time, require teaching evolution. Monkeying around

There was heated debate but the board, by a 4-3 vote, adopted a last-minute alternative that inserted the phrase "scientific theory of" in front of evolution and other concepts.

The most vocal board members before the vote were Roberto Martinez, a Coral Gables attorney, and Donna Callaway, a retired Tallahassee principal. Both voted "No" -- but for very different reasons.

And this from the Orlando Sentinel:

Though she had previously told the Florida Baptist Witness she would vote "No," she said today that she did not think her religious views colored her decision.

Callaway said she was not advocating creationism or intelligent design be taught but that students "know what we know," that is there may be other theories.

Martinez then asked, "What is the alternative theory?"

Callaway said, "You're saying there is only one theory."

Martinez: "I say that evolution is a fact and it is a fundamental fact."

Callaway: "There is a great difference of opinion in the world...There may be other theories ... This is a point of debate."

Martinez: "Its not a point of debate or controversy in the mainstream scientific community."

Both voted no in the end. Board members Phoebe Raulerson, Kathleen Shanahan and Linda Taylor along with Chairman Willard Fair voted "Yes."

Fair did not share his views. Raulerson said adding the phrase "scientific theory" in front of evolution made the standards more consistent, as a similar phrase was already in some places, such as in the descriptions of cell theory.

MEANWHILE - the US Government seems to be in  agreement.

The US National Academy of Sciences issued a spirited defence of evolution as the bedrock principle of modern biology, arguing that it, not creationism, must be taught in public school science classes.

The academy, which operates under a mandate from Congress to advise the government on science and technology matters, issued the report at a time when the theory of evolution, first offered in the 19th century, faces renewed attack by some religious conservatives.

Creationism, based on the explanation offered in the Bible, and the related idea of "intelligent design" are not science and, as such, should not be taught in public school science classrooms, according to the report.

Finally I want to make it clear. Personally, I believe in the theory of evolution. I also however believe that kids should be taught EVERYTHING.

Hugh - I could get into a whole debate with you about this, but I think what Florida has done today is simply wrong. To teach one without the other is not education, it's indoctrination.

Bill - that was funny! You do know that the American came to london and bought the WRONG bridge right?

Rob - actually you and I are pretty much n the same page. When I say I believe in the theory of evolution, that was perhaps a little too simplistic. Luckily I will never be able to run for President so can't be called a flip flopper. I think something happened first - asteroid, visitors from space, a divine being - and what has taken place since then has indeed evolved. The Dinosaur-bird connection is a fascinating area of study. I haven't googled it, but the tail bone work is really quite amazing.

Trey - I hera you - and I want it all taught.

God doesn't live by our timetable Just like Noah lived 500 years  not a point I find worth questioning because the answer is irelevant. What relevant is man was created in the image of God. and women was created out of the rib of man

Simon one thing you,ll find out about me , The one thing i refuse to be is a hypocrite. I don't believe you get to pick and choose. Why do you think it gets me so riled up to see these so called Christian politician walk out of church and then do an interview claiming they are pro-choice. God and the bible are not there to use when it suits you.

Simon - I think I do believe that some people came from monkeys.  Who can deny it.  However, for myself I believe man was created in the image of God.  How he did it, I'll leave up to Him.  I'm not so much interested in where I came from as I am in where I am going.

Dan:

I love your statement, "I'm not so much interested in where I came from as I am in where I am going."

I think I have heard it before but timing is everything.

Simon, This was a great post. It really is a very sensative subject as well as passionate for some.  With Florida being at the bottom in education my question to you is how is this going to help?  This to me is not what we should be spending time on.  We need to figure out how we can help better the education system in Florida.

Simon,

I am with Hugh, evolution is a theory that is unproven but the bible is the truth proven day in and day out.

The bible is not a myth and Genesis is not vague as Rob said. Look around you, is all this by accident?

DAN - I love the "some people came from Monkeys" part! Excellent.

Matthew - the last league table placed Florida 14th in the National Education league table.

Mike - in this land there has to be room for all beliefs. I do not deny yours and feel they should be taught. I equally feel that scientific theory needs to be taught as well.

Simon - I stand with the Biblical theory on this subject. It takes faith to believe but if you look at this world and the complexity of nature you can not convince me that anything other than God created it. There is no room for randomness. I think it takes more faith(however misdirected) to believe the evolution theory than in God.

Last summer, I attended Dinosaur World in Plant City (old-time low-tech theme park) with my kids.  It was actually quite fascinating.  I didn't realize how many full skeletons were discovered of some of these creatures.  It really makes you think hard about how it all began.

JUDY - So I am slightly confused - you don't want to teach this scientific theory?

ROB - I have driven past that place so many times!! Never been in though.

If something evolves, is it still around?  If I came from a monkey, why are there monkeys?  If these are different monkeys, why didn't they evolve?

Maybe God started with dinosaurs and monkeys and such and wasn't happy with his fellowship.  Animals could not write about that so they had no record of it.  Maybe he tried again with Adam and we all know he wasn't happy with that because we do have a written record of that(The Bible) but here we are today with a second chance because we can make decisions and understand them, unlike animals.
