So I'm working with this nice couple who is moving to our state from another one not too far away. He has taken a good paying job here and their kids are grown and gone.
Shortly after I met them a few weeks ago, she went back home to get their house on the market to sell. Now, you've heard all the BAD news about the housing market, right? I'll admit that I was worried. I have a client I sold a house to here in December. I found out the other day that they still haven't sold their house back in the state they moved from. OUCH! The good thing for them is that they moved with a Relocation package. Anyway, this new couple called me up over the weekend with GOOD NEWS. They got a full priced contract on their house. How cool is that, right?! So today it's off we go to find a house. We spent from 10 until 3 looking at houses with a break for lunch. We went back to two houses twice. The first time was me and the lady. The second time was me, her and the husband. Turns out that he likes one while she likes the other and they're NOT compromising. Aarrgh. The end of the day was spent with him back at work and her and I at the office digging through the MLS to see what else is out there. We have more lined up for tomorrow to go see.
I dragged myself home, totally worn out at about 4:30, making those 5 callbacks to the other people who tried to reach me through the day. Walked in the house, collasped for a quick power nap (yes, I do that and it actually works for me although I don't know why - should a 15 minute nap really refresh you THAT much?) and then headed back to the office for a contract signing where I'm representing the buyer and seller in a deal where a family member died very unexpectedly. It was a passing that really shook up the family. They had contacted me about listing the house which I would have gladly done for them. Before we got it listed, a neighbor came along wanting to buy the house, so it turned into a one time showing for a lesser commission. But that's okay. I'm honored to help this family in their time of loss. I could tell throughout the signing process that the father was glad to be moving forward.
Got home around 7:30 ready to eat. Walked in the door and the phone started ringing. Wow. There's my supper over there getting cold. I'm tired again. I've got people to talk to and to take care of and my wife to catch up with and the dog wants attention too and...finally, I get to sit down and eat my half cold supper and watch a little American Idol and talk to the wife.
Am I complaining? NO WAY. I love this job. I love the fact that my phone is ringing and that my buyers sold their home so fast back at home. I love that I get to help them figure out which home fits them best. I love helping a family process through a loss, even if it means by selling a house at a lesser rate. I love that, in our business, we are trained to answer questions and make a living without sitting behind a desk all the time.
I love this day too because even here in Oklahoma things aren't moving like they were the last couple of years. I know especially in other areas that it is really tough for my fellow Real Estate professionals out there. So the fact that I have some buyers to work with and that there is some business out there makes me very grateful. I'll take being tired and eating semi-cold food anyday if it means getting to do my job!
