Looking through design magazines I can't find any trash cans in the photographs. I don't really like looking at
them anyway but I wonder where do they hide them?
I know we need them however, I hate looking at them especially don't like taking a picture of them when I'm taking pictures of a listing. (I have a problems with dish-washing liquid bottles, tissue boxes and paper-town dispensers, too.)
What can the squeamish homeowner do with their trash can?
DON'T USE ONE
Some rooms, like the guest room or living room really don't need one. I have limited the use of cans to my bathroom, kitchen and office. Any refuse created in the rest of the house gets carried out and deposited into a container in trash-receiving rooms.
If you must have a trash can in the room, conceal it. Under the kitchen sink and in the bathroom vanity on roll-out shelves is a great place. Hiding behind the furniture or under the desk in a great alternative.
Melding it with the surrounding area is also easy. In an all white kitchen use a clean white container with a pedal controlled lid. In a little girls room you can add lace or ribbons to the brim or in a rustic decor you can use a rattan or wicker basket.
I think trash cans are a necessary evil but they can distract from the beauty of a home.
